Lot 1307

An Interesting Modern Replica Model of "John Harrisons" First Marine Timekeeper, H1, Made for the Granada/Channel 4 Feature Film "Longitude", the large and impressive (non working) replica model of typical form surmounted by two pendulum rods with massive bob weights and a central coiled balance spring, the model includes Harrisons complicated grid iron system which changed the lengths of the springs as the temperature changed, with solid brass movement plates and turned pillars throughout, both sides of the movement with counter weights, 9-inch oval brass dial with four silvered chapter rings for seconds, minutes, hour and date dials, 62cm by 55cm (dial displays are non functional), together with agreement letters regarding the making of the "H1" replica between the vendor and Granada Television In 1993, following the successful "Longitude" symposium at Harvard University, Dava Sobel was invited to write a condensed biography of the life of John Harrison. Against all expectations the book became an international best seller and has remained in print since the first publication in 1995. From the book there followed, in 1999, the BBC2 Horizon documentary "Longitude", and "Longitude" the stage play at Greenwich in 2005. However, the most notable media event was the feature film "Longitude" produced by Granada (with Channel 4) which became part of the millennium celebration, broadcast in January 2000. For the film it was necessary to produce a full size replica of "H1", Harrison`s first sea clock. It is this replica being sold here that was seen in the film, staring both Jeremy Irons and Michael Gambon, who played the part of John Harrison. The director, Charles Sturridge, was reported as saying "H1" was the third star of the film. This replica of "H1" was made by Derek Henden, a company specializing in making props and models for the film industry. It was built in six weeks at a cost in excess of £30,000. The basic dimensions were taken from drawings made by D.W.Fletcher, who restored the original "H1" c.1950, and provides a special authenticity which other existing replicas do not possess. This "H1" is a film prop and not a full working model. However, for the film the balances were activated electronically and although this facility has now been removed it would be possible to re-activate if required. After the making of "Longitude" this "H1" has been in demand from other film companies, as an iconic display in the commercial world, as a support role for lectures all around Britain and most recently. on display in an exhibition in France. This "H1" has further rental potential. The well established provenance, quite apart from the contribution to the history of John Harrison, means this replica is one of the most significant, instantly recognised and unique timekeepers in the history of horology. Our thanks to Andrew King for his kind assistance with these notes.
