Raised bands and gilt titling on the spine stand out on this exquisitely bound set. 4to. Approximate Dimensions:Each book: h. 10.25", w. 7". d. 1"Condition:Light wear to leather. Some pencil markings inside. Bookplate of a previous owner pasted down on front board.

Books are bound in a dark greyish brown bold ribbed cloth. The front and back covers are stamped in blind with a thick and thin border line and an elaborate flower-leaf design. The front boards feature a clock stamped in gold. Spine has gilt titling and decoration. Contains all of the first edition points listed in Smith (47-57). 4to. Approximate Dimensions:Each book: h. 10.25", w. 7", d. 1"Condition:Binding is chipping and crumbling at places, particularly at the spine. Some loss observed. Hinges and joings cracked at places. Volume 1 dedication page not present. Volume 2 back board has separated. Pages have some light staining in

Two complete volumes of "The New Yorker" volumes number 9 and 11, with volume 9, #1- 26, running from 3/21/1840 TO 9/12/1840 with #9 containing the American serialization and first appearance of "Master Humphrey's Clock" and the "Old Curiosity Shop" and with volume #11, #1-26 running from 3/20/1841 to 9/11/1841 with #11 containing "Barnaby Rudge." This was the American serialization and the first American appearance of "Barnaby Rudge." Both bound in leather with marbled paper overlays. Approximate Dimensions:Average: h. 12.25", w. 9"Condition:Volume 9: the leather spine is in great shape with a little wear to the hinges and some short separations of the leather at the foot and header. The boards have some shelving wear on the edges. Inside the first paper has the name of L.E. Smith

Charles Dickens, ALS, a framed letter and engraved plate photo mounted under matting and covered in glass, sent from Devonshire Terrace, Regent's Park (now Marylebone Road), London on February 11, 1841. The letter states, "My dear Maclise, we were speaking of Ethelstan. Le voici. I'm sorry the water or ale held you so long last night. We adjourned from the private box to the Parthenon, and were rather jolly. Hot joints here on Sunday a five o'clock. Faithfully always, BOZ". Maclise was Dickens's portrait painter who had become close friends the summer before his first portrait was painted. Dickens recorded in a letter of 28 June 1839 that "Maclise has made another face of me, which all people say is astonishing." At the time of this writing Dickens will be publishing 'Barnaby Rudge' that was serialized in Master Humphrey's Clock. Approximate Dimensions:Letter h.6.5", w.4.5" Frame h. 11", w. 12.75"Condition:Letter had been folded to fit in a period small penny post envelope, then laid flat and framed. It looks to have had been around some moisture at one time thus showing some discolorization on the face of the letter and some toning on the top mat
