This portrait is featured on Page 49 (Plate 1) of ‘Edward John Dent and his Successors’, by Vaudrey Mercer.Richard Rippon was the cousin of Edward John Dent, the celebrated chronometer and clockmaker responsible for building the largest and most accurate public clock in the world known as Big Ben. Dent learnt his skills as a maker of watches and clocks at the beginning of his career from Richard Rippon, who was an expert watchmaker.Following his death Elizabeth Rippon married Edward John Dent – the founder of E. Dent & Co Ltd. His stepson Frederick William (Rippon) Dent completed the construction of Big Ben.Additional InformationVerso there is a label for 'Conservation Matters' dated 2002/3. Tears to the canvas were carried out by Richard Watkins and the painting was relined onto linen. The frame was conserved by Yvonne Jarzebowska. (Please see images of this label)The painting has some craqueleur, some edge wear, a small white paint spot to the lower right and a small chip to the lower left. The right ear of the sitter may also have some later painting.

Light surface scratches throughout. Rubbing to the metalwork, the door pin has been lost and is replaced with a crude fitting at the moment. A couple of small chips to the corners of the bevelled glass on the back door. Dial appears ok.

Further painted detail to the front panels, also rubbing but still present. Rubbing to the gilding. Pendulum present.

A 19th century French jasperware mantel clock with inlaid and applied gilt metal detail, the finial with a maiden seated on a plinth above circular dial set with both Arabic and Roman numerals above gilt metal plinth depicting cherubs in landscape, height 41cm.Additional InformationWe cannot guarantee that the clock is in full working order. It’s pendulum but no key. The dial has some chips at winding apertures and a nick below XII, three hair line cracks also and some scratches. The figure to the top has a poorly repaired break to the neck, a glue repaired break to the left arm and also to the left foot, lacking lyre. Figure is also slightly loose and grubby throughout. Metal plateau to the top of the clock is loose and the clock is grubby throughout. Some small chips and losses to the case.

JAMES WOOD OF LONDON; a fine George III ebonised bracket clock, the swing brass handle above arched silvered dial inscribed 'Song, Paddy Wack/Cotillion/Changes', with a triple fusee movement striking on eight graduated bells beside a further bell with floral engraved back plate and raised on scrolling ormolu feet, height 55cm, width 33cm.Additional InformationThe ormolu feet are later editions, they do not quite fit correctly and one of the feet is detached but present. Above the arched dial there is a small section of the ebony which has split and been re-glued. The pendulum feather is snapped but the pendulum is present. Further splits to the ebony veneer in some areas. We have the key for the case. It is sold with associated modern painted bracket.

WINTERHALDER & HOFMEIER; an impressive Victorian ebonised bracket clock with five applied bronzed metal urn finials and applied detail, flanking the brass face with applied silver dials, the larger dial bearing Roman and Arabic numerals, raised on claw feet, with ebonised bracket, overall height 99cm, with presentation plaque to body.Additional InformationThe presentation reads 'Presented to Mr Samuel Woollam by the Unionists of the South West...of Manchester, in recognition of valuable service rendered during a period of ten years, December 2nd 1891', the case with splits, the finials are slightly loose, there are scuffs, gouges and scratches to the case, wear to the metalwork, the movement looks af, and the chimes are slightly loose/need tightening, complete with pendulum, we offer no guarantee that the clock is in working, losses to the veneer to the reverse, the lock is missing from the door back, a couple of the feet are loose, the bracket with large open splits.
