A Fine and Rare William and Mary Walnut Marquetry Longcase Clock with Bolt and Shutter Maintaining Power, signed Daniel Quare, London, circa 1690, Barley twist columns, rising hood, throat mouldings beneath hood, side viewing windows, trunk door with D-ended floral marquetry inlaid panels, 10-inch square brass dial with a silvered chapter ring signed, finely matted dial centre with scroll engraved date aperture, seconds dial, finely pierced blued steel hands, winged cherub spandrels, six pillar latched movement with an anchor escapement and inside countwheel striking on a bell, bolt and shutter maintaining power with pull cord, later seatboard, 214cm high see illustrations Purchased by the current vendor from John Carlton Smith Antique Clock Dealer at 17 Ryder Street, St James, London. Daniel Quare (1647-1724). He was admitted as a Brother of the Clockmakers' Company in 1671 and served as Master in 1708. He was one of the most celebrated clockmakers of the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Examples of his work can be seen in major collections and museums around the world. 30.01.20 The case has good patina and good colour, hood with later pierced frets to the borders, hood with small chips to the throat moulding, veneers with cracks in parts, trunk door with small chips, marquetry panels with small crazing crack marks, both sides of the plinth with veneer lifting and some inlaid stringing is missing, silvered dial chapter ring, is slightly discoloured in parts, movement is clean and in going order, bottom left hand side movement pillar is bent and one small crack fracture, back cock screws are later, later seatboard, with pendulum and two brass cased weights.

A Thirty Hour Single Handed Striking Lantern Form Clock with Unusual Spike Feet, signed William Monk, circa 1720, four posted movement with an anchor escapement and outside countwheel striking on a bell, spike feet, 10-3/4-inch square brass dial with a silvered chapter ring signed Wm Monk Fecit, finely scroll and floral engraved dial centre, ringed date aperture, single hand, 35cm high see illustration William Monk (1689-1753) was born and baptised in the village church of Berwick St. John in 1689. He worked at Berwick St John and was an apprentice to James Delaunce of Frome. William worked in Berwick all his life and made the clock for the town in 1740. Other examples of this distinctive feature of spike feet can be seen on James Delaunce's work. It is though that the spiky feet introduction must have been by James Delaunce and this must have been invented to make the clock slide-proof during winding. The spikes would secure into the seatboard for a safe grip and this would have the same affect as spikes on a lantern clock when located into the wall. See (Darken & Hooper) English 30 Hour Clocks, pgs 148, 149 and 414. 11.02.20 Chapter ring is slightly discoloured, movement is complete, movement is slightly dusty, in going order, with pendulum and weight.

A Mignonette Brass Striking and Repeating Carriage Clock, signed Henri Jacot, circa 1880, gorge style case with carrying handle and repeat button, enamel dial with Roman numerals, twin barrel movement with a silvered platform lever escapement and striking on a gong, movement backplate stamped with maker's mark HJ for (Henri Jacot) and numbered 5418, 13cm high over handle see illustration 29.01.20 Brass surfaces with small scratches and minor dents in parts, back door glass with one chip to the top right hand corner, dial is clean, movement is clean, strike and repeat functions are working, in going order.

~ An Unusual Mahogany Striking Wall Clock with Lunar Dial Display, Gothic style case with a canopy pediment, trunk with recessed panels, waisted base, 12-inch dial bearing a later inscription to the centre Thos Hall Rumsey, scroll and bird engraved decoration, lunar sphere display in the arch, large six pillar movement with a deadbeat escapement and outside countwheel striking on a bell, 19th century case, later dial and movement, 182cm high see illustration 04.02.20 Case with small cracks to the veneers, veneers have been replaced in parts, some mouldings are missing, dial is discoloured, arch with some chips to the painted surface and to the lunar display, movement front plate with two vacant holes to the top right and left hand corners. With two weights, pendulum is missing.

~ A Rare and Unusual Walnut Eight Day Longcase Clock with Newcomens Type Industrial Steam Beam Engine Automata Dial Display, signed Thompson, Whitehaven, circa 1740, broken arch pediment, hood with Ionic fluted canted columns, crossbanded trunk door, matching plinth with canted corners, 12-3/4-inch arch brass dial with chapter ring signed, dial centre with scroll and bird engraved decoration, seconds and date aperture, dial with engraved borders, dial arch with a beam engine automata, four pillar movement with an anchor escapement and rack striking on a bell, 237cm high see illustrations This unusual automatum shows an early example of Newcomens type steam beam engine. Newcomen invented in 1712 the world's first atmospheric steam engine. The engine was designed to pump water using a vacuum created by condensed steam. In the Industrial Revolution in Britain this became an important method of draining water from deep mines. 29.01.20 Case needs restoring, some veneers are missing and some mouldings are missing, veneers are lifting in parts, veneers with some cracks and chips in parts, hood appears to have mouldings missing around the lower edge which shows a gap when the hood is fully pushed on, front of the plinth is cracked, later feet, dial is dirty and needs cleaning, movement needs cleaning, with pendulum and two weights, pendulum bob has broken off the pendulum rod.

He was apprenticed to Nottingham clockmaker Daniel Tantum in 1724. 29.01.20 Case with scratches, small cracks and small chips in parts, front of the plinth with a small crack to the top left hand corner, dial with small staining marks, movement needs cleaning.

He started his apprenticeship to John Ogden of Bowbridge in Yorkshire. In 1691 he moved back to Tiffenthwaite and started to make his first clocks, which have several distinctive features, such as religious dial verses. 06.02.20 Dial is dirty and needs cleaning, movement needs cleaning, later seatboard, no pendulum and no weight.

An Imposing Gilt Metal Striking Mantel Clock Garniture, retailed by John Walker, 230 Regent Street, London, circa 1890, the elaborate case surmounted by dolphins, side lion head masks with acanthus leaf decoration, scroll feet, 4-3/4-inch cast dial with Roman numeral cartouches, central plaque signed by retailer, twin barrel movement striking on a gong, 68cm high, matching ewer garniture, 60cm high see illustration 06.02.20 Clock case and garniture surfaces are bright and in good condition, dial with minor scratches to the 12 o'clock cartouche numeral, movement needs cleaning, in going order, with pendulum.
