CRIPPEN DR. HAWLEY HARVEY: (1862-1910) American Homeopathic Physician, hanged for the murder of his wife. Crippen was the first criminal to be captured with the aid of wireless communication. T.L.S., H H Crippen, two pages, 4to, Kingsway, London, 14th June 1910, to Arthur Scott, on the printed stationery of The Aural Remedies Company at Craven House. Crippen states that he has received the Analytical Form submitted by his correspondent 'and after careful examination of the symptoms and particular conditions it describes, I find you are suffering from OTITIS MEDIA CATARRHALIS, that is to say, catarrhal deafness caused by catarrh affecting the membrane which lines the middle ear, and covers the small bones contained in this cavity', further providing an explanation of the condition, 'The drumhead has become thickened in such a manner as to prevent its responding naturally to the sound vibrations which reach it through the outer ear canal….Inflammation and thickening of the membrane which covers the chain of small bones stretching between the drumhead and the inner ear, thus preventing the natural movements of the joints which unite them…..A generally congested condition which weakens the delicate muscles and nerves of the middle ear thus causing deafness….' and suggesting a remedy for the ailment which 'can be thoroughly and effectually accomplished by means of my Appliances and accessories which are undoubtedly the most effective ever introduced for the alleviation and cure of deafness and noises in the head', adding that the total cost would be One Guinea and remarking 'As you will doubtless wish to adopt my treatment with the least possible delay I am having the necessary remedies prepared so that they may be sent off immediately', and also stating that 'The whole of the Treatment is perfectly simple and can be used and applied with entire ease in your own home' as well as relaying a testimonial from a Mrs. Brotherton of Wiltshire who had written to Crippen telling him that she could now hear quite well and 'Before using your treatment I could not hear anything at all, not even a knock at the door or the clock ticking. Now I can hear a watch tick at arm's length. It is wonderful that I should have regained my hearing in three weeks and I am very thankful'. Crippen concludes by remarking that he feels 'confident that your trouble will soon disappear and that a complete and permanent cure will be established'. Scarce. With a few small, neat splits to the edges of the folds, only very slightly affecting a few words of text but not the signature, G The present letter is accompanied by a small newspaper clipping bearing the headline Whitley man has letters by Crippen and in which it states, in part, 'Three letters from wife murderer Dr. H. H. Crippen are owned by 76-year-old Mr. A. Scott…..who offers them for sale. Dr. Crippen offered to cure deafness….Mr. Scott, who is deaf, was under the personal supervision of Dr. Crippen….”I was waiting for an answer to one of my letters when Dr. Crippen vanished. I had a letter from the firm he was running to say 'kindly note Dr. Crippen is no longer connected with us.'” A letter written by Crippen in May 1910 brought a high price in 1949. Mr. Scott's letters are dated June 9, 14 and 20, 1910'.
