His father William James Frodsham (1779-1850) and Hannah Lambert had ten children, five of whom were apprenticed to their father and later became horologists in their own right.By the mid-1850s Charles had established himself as one of the period’s most eminent horologists.

* P&O. A fine Victorian giltwood wall clock by James Muirhead, Glasgow circa 1870, the case carved with P&O crest of a sun with rays with two dolphins, the white painted dial with black roman numerals with steel moon hands and with slow/fast regulation to the centre, the eight-day movement with cut corner plates joined by four pillars, single chain fusee with maintaining power, lever escapement with monometallic balance positioned on the front plate, the back signed James Muirhead / 90 Buchanan St.t / Glasgow, 92 cm high QTY: (1)NOTE:Provenance: Christie's, The Gyrn Castle Sale, North Wales, 17 / 18 July 2006 (lot 11).The clock was formerly displayed on the P&O steamship Euxine, a paddle steamer built by Caird and Co., Greenock in 1847, she weighed 1,164 tons. Sir Edward Bates, 1st Bt (1816-1896) bought the steamer in 1868 for £4275 and he had it converted to a sailing vessel by Laird & Co, Birkenhead. A copied letter is included with the lot which states that the clock was displayed in Sickhouse Court, Liverpool. There are two dates on the letter, 1928 and 1972 (the latter probably when it was photocopied). The letter was found in the back of the clock and gives family history plus an incident which occurred on the Euxine.On 5 August 1874, the ship was destroyed by fire when on passage from North Shields to Aden with a cargo of coal. 23 crew members managed to reach St. Helena in two of the ship's boats. A further five were rescued by a Dutch vessel, having killed and eaten one of their crew (the letter gives an account of this).

An aircraft instrument panel containing turn slip, artificial horizon, airspeed and directional gyro by Jack & Heinz Inc, Ohio, USA, 26 x 30.5 cm, together with an eight-day cockpit clock, with day and night option, makers plate for Camerer Cuss, London, Serial Number 2383 (not working), a Smiths cockpit clock with stores reference number CA/2089, serial number 196/71 (not working) plus another clock, and two boxes of instruments including pressure gauges, pitot switch, altimeter switch and other items, many still in Air Ministry card boxes QTY: (3 cartons)
* Luftwaffe. A WWII German aircraft clock by Junghans, with 54 mm circular black dial and luminous Arabic numerals, hands and subsidiary seconds dial, black painted case with brass winding crown and four holes for securing to the instrument panel, the screwback enclosing movement stamped J30 BZ, stops after a few seconds and could therefore benefit from an overhaul QTY: (1)
* Propeller. A WWI clock made from the hub of a mahogany propeller, the circular dial with black Arabic numerals secured by a large chrome plate with 8 large nuts, 43 cm long, together with a WWI barometer made of the hub of a propeller, the glass cracked, the propeller stamped D 90 P 60, DRG No T 28937/1, 39.5 cm long, a tobacco barrel made from the hub of a propeller, the cover with turned finial 17 cm high x 17.5 cm diameter, plus a pair of propeller blade photograph frames each inset with a black and white photograph of a bi-plane, 24.5 cm high, a single propeller tip photograph frame painted with a RFC bi-plane and inscribed 'Italy 1917-18-19', inset with a black and white portrait photograph of an airman, 27.5 cm high and other items including a Royal Flying Corps cap badge QTY: (9)
