Attributed to Henry Clay; a George III oval tea caddy with ground mother-of-pearl and lacquer finish (Nashiji) and opposing vignettes depicting classical figures, 12cm wide x 13cm high x 8cm deep. IllustratedNashiji is a form of Japanese lacquer-work where gold, silver or mother-of-pearl flakes called nashiji-ko are sprinkled onto the surface of the object on which lacquer has been applied. Nashiji lacquer is then applied and burnished with charcoal, so that the nashiji-ko can be seen through the lacquer. The name 'nashiji' is thought to have originated in the resemblance that the lacquer bears to the skin of a Japanese pear, nashi.

Not original. Victorian caddy spoon with small dents to rim of bowl and flattened end of bowl. Mother of pearl butter knife has a loose collar and the edge of the knife is slightly bent. Ivory handled butter knife has a bent blade. Pickle fork - Handle has some wear and the hallmarks are rubbed.

Ivory escutcheon broken. General scratches and wear to surface with cracks to both sides. Interior with section of veneer missing to bottom left hand front corner. Centre circular section with split and knock. Oak caddy - Wear to red paper lining to lid. Lining to both compartments worn. Mahogany caddy - Screw replaced in lock. Lining to lid and compartments worn. Mother of pearl escutcheon cracked with knocks and scratches to surface. Rosewood and mother of pearl inlaid box - Interior tray lacking. Pink satin cushioned lid interior with two rips.
