An early 19th century tortoiseshell hexagonal tea caddy, with ivory finial and shaped body. 14 cm high. CONDITION REPORT: This tea caddy is an attractive example overall in a sound condition and retaining inner lid, but does have a few issues to mention as follows:- Firstly the entire exterior surface of the caddy exhibits various wispy striations. This may be because the surface needs nourishing with polish or maybe because there is separation of the veneer from the underside, we do not know and cannot comment further. Looking at the top of the caddy the ivory finial has a small hairline crack and there is a small nibble to the tortoiseshell hexagonal ledge immediately below. Looking at the top, one of the white metal wires emanating from the finial is slightly bent to the corner and there is a small degree of chipping to the tortoiseshell in this area. Looking at the base of the caddy there is slight loss to the metal stringing to the lower left of the front panel and there is a small amount of chipping to the bottom front left corner. Turning the caddy counterclockwise there is further loss to this metal stringing to three of the panel corners. Looking at the rear of the caddy the hinge is slightly loose from the base and there are two areas of ivory stringing missing to the left of the hinge. The push catch is rather stiff and we are trying to avoid closing the caddy because of this. The caddy retains the inner lid but there are a few small chips to the tortoiseshell. The lid does retain the ivory handle and it is in good condition. The lid of the caddy is lined with later purple velvet and the interior is slightly damaged to the tin lining. The underside of the caddy retains the seemingly original black Morocco leather insert.
A George III tortoiseshell oval tea caddy, with ball finial and reeded sides. 13 cm high (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The caddy really is in first class condition. We can see no evidence of any significant damage, repairs or restoration. There are some minor stress fractures to the surface but again these are in our opinion hardly significant. The lid closes as it should and there is no warping. The lock, escutcheon and keeper are all present but we do not have a key. There are some stress fractures to the ivory beneath the lid and to the top of the caddy itself and there is one small loss near the hinge. The lid is not warped and fits well. Much of the lead lining is present with only minor perishing. The main body of the piece is in good order. The feet and leather base appear original.
A George III ivory decagonal tea caddy, inlaid with tortoiseshell stringing, the front inset with white metal vacant shield cartouche. 11 cm high (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: This caddy is externally in good overall condition although there is a small piece of tortoiseshell stringing loose to the front lower edge (currently secured by Sellotape) some loss to the baize to base, very slight scratching to the front panel and some damage to the foil interior.
A George III green tortoiseshell oval tea caddy, the lid inset with engraved white metal rectangular cartouche. 11 cm high, lacking inner lid (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The caddy is in generally good order with no significant losses or fractures to the tortoiseshell. The only real issue is that the tortoiseshell, in particular to the lid is lifting and visibly rippled in the centre but with no accompanying stress fractures or cracks. The tortoiseshell to both the front and the back is also lifting a little in places but no as significantly as to the lid. The lid shuts correctly. There is no warping. There is no interior lid. The hinge, lock and escutcheon are original. We have no key. The fabric to the base is perished but appears to be original.
A George III silver tea caddy by William Plummer, of shaped oval outline, with urn finial and engraved throughout with floral swags. 12 cm high, London 1786, weight 291 grams (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The lid of this caddy does not close quite to flush, lifting slightly about the width of the lid on the right-hand edge. There is a small dent to the left-hand edge probably about a fingertip size which is relatively shallow and mostly likely would push out. There is no apparent splitting to the metal. The hallmarks and makers mark are very clearly impressed. There is a very small dent to the base at the front right-hand edge. Overall this caddy is a good example and bears an engraved initial monogram which is rather feint to the lid.
