A pair of French WWI Binoculars in a mismatched British WW1 leather case. To include: Binoculars marked with an arrow and MG (Ministere de la Guerre). Leather bound body with blackened brass eye pieces, these marked ‘MKV SPL 62823’ The case is British issue, and with embossed markings to the lid, which read ‘Case No.3 Prismatic Binocular Mark II J.D.Watts & Co 1916’. The officer’s name is F.T. Blennerhassett R.F.A. Notes: Captain Blennerhassett of the Royal Field Artillery landed in France on September 21st 1917, he’d been commissioned on February 20th 1917. Capt Blennerhassett was a native of Balsall Common in Coventry, and he is entitled to the BWM and Victory Medal. The army lists suggests that he also served during WW2, with his having attained the rank of Lt Col in 1945. Condition: generally good. The leather case has a nice colour and patina, but there are some tiny old paint flecks to the lid. The belt loops and retaining lid strap are still present. The binoculars have some service wear, but would appear to operate as they should. The optics would appear to be clear. Please note: as the binocular and case are a mismatch, the lid doesn’t quite close properly.
WW1 Lincolnshire Yeomanry casualty interest. A pair of military No.3 Mark II prismatic binoculars and case, issued to 2nd Lt A.T. King of the Lincolnshire Yeomanry. Manufactured by Carl Zeiss London Ltd. Both the binoculars and case are broad arrow marked, with both also dated 1916. The back to back broad arrow marks to both binoculars and case would indicate that they were sold out of service. Standard black painted brass body, with leather covering to the mid section. Adjustable to the bridge section, and independently focusing eye pieces. Reticle to the right hand lens for range finding. Notes: A.T.King was noted as having been killed in action on November 17th 1917. The binoculars have been used for many years after WW1, with several horse racing swing labels attached to the shoulder strap (these date from the 1940’s and 50’s). Condition: generally good, with service wear. The binoculars have the usual worn black paint to the extremities, revealing the brass base metal. Leather covering is good, and the lenses seem to focus. There is some dirt in the lenses and they are a little fogged. Shoulder strap is dry and a little crack, plus missing a securing stud. The case is solid, but there is some fading to the brown leather surface.
A WW1 British officers marching compass, by Negretti & Zambra. Brass body with black painted finish, viewing window to the lid and suspension ring. Complete with its original leather case and strap, named to ‘M Blakeway Royal Tank Corps’. Officially embossed maker mark and date of ‘T.F.&S 1916’. Notes: consigned by the original owners granddaughter. Malcolm Blakeway entered the war on August 10th 1915, and originally served as a 2nd Lt in the 1st battalion Yorks & Lancs Regiment. He later attained his Captaincy while serving in the Tank Corps. He is entitled to the 1915 star, BWM, and Victory medal. He was a native of Handsworth, Birmingham, and later of Chaddesley Kidderminster. It’s believed that he also held a commission during WW2, again as a Captain in the Royal Armoured Corps. He relinquished this commission on August 16th 1945, and was granted the honorary rank of Major. Condition: generally very good. Normal service wear to both the compass and its case. There appears to be a zig-zag pattern lightly scratched into the lid of the compass, likely from the WW1 era (perhaps a moment of boredom?). The compass appears to work as it should, with the stop button also functional. The leather case has a good colour and patina. It may have had a different original owner during WW1, as there is another name inked out on the case.
