It is believed that Maillardet built the Automaton around 1800 and it has the largest "memory" of any such machine ever constructed-four drawings and three poems (two in French and one in English).Automata, such as Maillardet's Automaton, demonstrated mankind's efforts to imitate life by mechanical means-and are fascinating examples of the intersection of art and science.

Flintlock musketoon with possible Tipu Sultan connection. Flintlock musketoon with possible Tipu Sultan connection, 30inch octagonal to round barrel with fine brass inlaid decoration and flaring blunderbuss muzzle, crowned GR lock stamped Tower, chequered stock with later added Indian decorative carving. The musketoon is adorned with period applied Indian form inlaid geometric and foliate designs to the barrel. The wood is also period carved with a foliate design featuring red coloured flowers on stems with leaves. This design matches that found on an embroidered arrow quiver which was part of ‘the Tipu Sultan collection’ sold at 'Bonhams Islamic and Indian Art Sale' held on 21st April 2015. This carving possibly indicates capture by Tipu Sultan’s forces for use against the EIC.Tipu, the “Tiger of Mysore” was the last king of Mysore. He was the East India Company’s most tenacious enemy, inflicting numerous defeats on the British, partly through his development of military rockets, before his death at Seringapatam in 1799 when he was defeated by the British Army, led by Major General David Baird. Tipu once said: “I would rather live one day as a tiger than a lifetime as a sheep”. When the British under Baird’s leadership finally captured Tipu’s capital city, the conquerors were astonished at the jewels, arms and art objects that Tipu had collected. Baird, son of an Edinburgh merchant family, later declared Tipu dead, from a gunshot to the head and three bayonet wounds. After his death many items of Tipu Sultan’s, arms, armour & jewellery were captured and ended up in private collections of British Officer’s who took part in Tipu’s final battle. Section 58 (2) Antique / obsolete calibre, can be owned without a licence. Buyer must be over the age of 18, age verification will be required if the lot is to be posted out.115.5cm long The gun has a dark worn overall patina. The action works correctly with a strong spring. The metal work has overall pitting which is heavier in places such as the muzzle of the gun. The stock has been covered in an overall treacle black coloured varnish probably to hide these repairs. The bolt (or side nail) which holds the lock in place and the butt plate screws have been replaced. The brass of the side plate is a slightly different shade perhaps indicating a replacement. The buttplate could also be a replacement.

SUFFRAGETTES – HOLLOWAY BROOCHSilver 'Portcullis' or 'Holloway' brooch awarded to Lizzie Berkeley of Hebden Bridge, depicting the portcullis of the House of Commons, one [of two] hanging chains and superimposed broad arrow in purple, green and white enamel, with safety chain and pin, stamped 'SILVER' and 'TOYE & CO/ LONDON' on reverse, 25 x 21mm., [1909]; together with a contemporary cardboard box depicting diagonal stripes in the WSPU colours, lined in green velvet, 55 x 55mm.; programme for the 'Mass Meeting of Women' at the Royal Albert Hall on 29th April 1909, 8 pages, outer leaves detached, old tape repairs, fragile, 8vo; with an essay by Lizzie Berkeley on prison conditions, and another entitled 'Marie Corelli and Women's Suffrage', an argument against the anti-suffrage movement, written in ink in a Jubilee exercise book, 11 leaves, stained, marked, some leaves detached, paper covers, 4to, [n.d.] (4)Footnotes:'WHERE IS THE JUSTICE AND CIVILISATION OF WHICH ENGLAND IS SO PROUD': A Yorkshire suffragette receives her 'Victoria Cross' and speaks of the conditions she experienced in prison.Known variously as the Portcullis Badge, Holloway Prison Brooch and the Victoria Cross of the Union, the silver brooch was presented by the WSPU to women imprisoned at Holloway Prison for militant suffragette activity. Designed by Sylvia Pankhurst, it includes the portcullis symbol for parliament, the chains of imprisonment and the broad arrow of the prison uniform picked out in the colours of the WSPU; purple (dignity), white (purity) and green (hope). Initially mentioned in Votes for Women on 16 April 1909, the first brooches were presented by Christabel and Emmeline Pankhurst, Annie Kenney and Emmeline Pethick Lawrence at the 29th April 'Mass Meeting', the programme for which is included in the lot. The programme lists a Miss Berkeley under the roll call of prisoners, and she may well have been at that meeting to receive her award. It is not known whether the box accompanying the brooch is the original, but it nonetheless remains a rare survival of suffragette memorabilia from the period. Elizabeth (or 'Lizzie') Berkeley (1883-1969) was a button machinist from Hebden Bridge, Yorkshire. Her father George trained as a teacher but by the 1891 census he was listed as unemployed and his son Robert, aged 11, the grandfather of the current owner, was forced to work in an iron foundry in Halifax to support the family. An article in Leeds Mercury of 22 March 1907 under the headline 'The Suffragette Martyrs: Fifty Women go to Prison', notes that she was fined 40s or 14 days imprisonment for taking part in a large demonstration outside the Houses of Parliament – one of the first so-called 'rushes' – on 18 March 1907. Her experience in Holloway prompted her to write a heartfelt diatribe in her notebook against conditions for all prisoners, not just for suffragettes, distinguishing between third and first division prisoners, describing their isolation, loneliness and inactivity, the terrible food and conditions, and asking why things can't be improved; '...do you wonder that people are driven mad, or broken in health, is there any humanity in such treatment, the dress itself is like an outward visible sign of inward wrong...', she writes. She remained unmarried and died in 1969. The brooch has remained in the family since then. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

A BRONZE FIGURE OF KRISHNA, TAMIL NADU, SOUTH INDIA, 15TH/16TH CENTURY, standing in tribhanga on a raised lotus base, his left arm raised, wearing elaborate belt with lion head clasp, earrings and tall headdress, 19.5cm high This form of Krishna, depicted with his arms raised, is often confused with Rama, whose pose when holding bow and arrow is similar. In this case, however, there is no quiver of arrows over his shoulder, and the god is resting his left arm on the shoulders of his favourite consort Satyabhama. For a Chola bronze of the same iconography in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, see Pal 1988, p.278 Provenance: Collection of the late Peter Millett (1925-2016)
A GREY STONE IMAGE OF VIRABHADRA, DECCAN, INDIA, CIRCA 15TH CENTURY, the four-armed deity holding sword and shield in his primary hands and bow and arrow in his upper hands, a small figure of the goat-headed Daksha at his feet, 21.2cm high Provenance: Collection of the late Peter Millett (1925-2016)
A LARGE VIRABHADRA PLAQUE, WESTERN DECCAN, INDIA, 18TH CENTURY, of waisted rectangular form, the form armed form of Siva holding sword, shield, bow and arrow, Nandi and sun and moon emblems above, sheltering under a five-headed cobra, wearing sandals, flanked by Daksha and Sati, a handle at the back, 28 x 20cm For a similar plaque in the Norton Simon Museum, Pasadena, see Pal 2003, p.303. Daksha offended Siva by not inviting him to attend a sacrifice following an earlier occasion when Siva had slighted him. Sati, who was Daksha's daughter, as well as being Siva's wife, was present and felt so insulted that she threw herself on the pyre. Then Siva appeared as Virabhadra and cut off Daksha's head to avenge his wife. Other gods pleaded for Daksha's life, but although Siva decided to spare him, his severed head could not be found, so the head of a goat was substituted instead. Daksha is depicted with hands in namaskara mudra, humbly paying respects, while at the bottom, he appears prior to the replacement head Provenance: Collection of the late Peter Millett (1925-2016)
