c. 1400 AD, Medieval Persian. This beautiful iron axe comprises a circular socket, broad, curving blade with nipped upper toe (the highest part of the blade). Probable gilded decoration on both sides of the neck and blade comprises three vertical bands and an arrow motif formed from three rows of horizontal triangles. Medieval Persia was an unstable and warlike place, where a dozen different dynasties rose and fell by the blade in the course of the 500 years before the Safavids brought peace and stability to the region in 1501 AD. This beautiful axe embodies the need for medieval Persians to be armed and ready in order to survive and thrive. Good condition. Size: H:150mm/L:140mm/H:115mm; 703g. Provenance: Property of a professional London art expert; obtained from an old British collection formed in the 1980s.

c. 800-1100 AD. Viking age. An iron bearded axe head with a heavy curved blade and a round socket. Both sides of the axe feature etched deecoration: on one side a star and undulating lines and on the other side a triple arrow design. The item is mounted on a custom-made stand. The bearded axe, or Skeggøx (from Old Norse Skegg, "beard", and øx, "axe") was common from the 6th century AD onwards in Scandinavia, but made most famous by the Vikings, who used these axes in battle to terrible effect. Bearded axes are named for the fact that the main part of the axe blade extends below the butt of the axe, creating a large cutting blade and allowing a fighter to hook onto the shields or weapons of his (or her) opponents. Further information on axes of this type can be found in H. Arbman, Birka I: Die Gräber, Uppsala, 1940. Excellent condition. Size: H:163mm/L:150mm/H:108mm (without stand); 712g. Provenance: From the private collection of an Essex gentleman; previously in an old British Collection, formed in the 1990s.

Arrows were a key part of medieval society both as instruments of war but also as weapons for hunting. One of the most evocative images of arrows as weapons of war appears on the Bayeux Tapestry, where King Harold is depicted after taking an arrow to the eye, leading to the Norman victory at the Battle of Hastings in 1066 AD. For further information on arrowheads, see C. Rau (2017) European Arrowheads and Crossbow Bolts: From the Bronze Age to the Late Middle Ages. Fair condition. Size: L:57-100mm; 60g. Provenance: Private London collection, formed since the 1980s on the UK and European art market.
