MINDSZENTY JOZSEF: (1892-1975) Hungarian Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church, Prince Primate of Hungary and Archbishop of Esztergom 1945-73. Mindszenty was imprisoned by the pro-Nazi Arrow Cross Party during World War II and was later given a life sentence in a show trial in 1949. He was freed in the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 and finally allowed to leave the country in 1971. Signed 6.5 x 8.5 photograph of the Cardinal in a head and shoulders pose wearing his religious robes. Mindszenty holds his head in his hands and several microphones appear on the table before him. Photograph by John Fairfax & Sons of Sydney, captured at a press conference in Sydney in the early 1970s shortly after his release from asylum in the United States embassy in Budapest.
