Couaillet frères, a French Corniche brass carriage clock: the eight-day duration movement having a silvered platform lever escapement and striking the hours and half-hours on a gong with the backplate stamped with the hand-setting arrow as used by the Couaillet workshop of Saint Nicolas d'Aliermont, the inside plates stamped with the blanc roulant serial number 8307, the ivorine chapter ring having stylised black Arabic numerals, a gilded matt mask, a decorative floral centre and blued steel spade hands, the brass case with typical three-bail handle, height 17.5cm. handle up, 14.5cm. handle down.*Biography Armand Couaillet founded the clockmakers Couaillet frères in 1895 alongside his brothers Ernest & Henri with workshops in the horological town of Saint Nicolas d'Aliermont near Dieppe. They became one of the largest suppliers of complete carriage clocks as well as blancs roulants, the rough movements, to be finished by others, and took over the large premises of the well-known carriage clock makers Delépine-Barrois in 1913. Delépine had family links with the Baveux family of carriage clock makers who themselves supplied many of the top carriage clock makers including Henri Jacot whose workshops were adjacent to those of Couaillet. The style of movement in this clock, along with the double-finned dial pillars, would suggest a clock made by Delépine-Barrois and quite possibly being a part of the stock taken on by Couaillet.
