Watches needed to have a high level of water-resistance with robust cases, lumed hour markers and hands and reliable movements among other specs. Across the twelve companies, it is estimated that around 150,000 were made and Grana (a Swiss brand founded in 1888, now Certina) were responsible for creating the smallest quantity, potentially only around 5,000. As a result, Grana examples from the twelve are considered the rarest and achieve some of the highest results at auction. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

They are named Mark X or W.W.W. (Watches Wristlet Waterproof) and were produced by 12 watch manufacturers, including Omega, Longines, Cyma, Jaeger LeCoultre and IWC. Later being widely known as the 'Dirty Dozen'.Although these watches were made for military use, it was found that they are unreliable for aviation due to the low level of accuracy. International Watch Company and Jaeger LeCoultre then produced 6B/346, or Mark XI watches specifically for pilot's use.The current example features a circled T on the dial to indicate the presence of tritium. As per the changing regulation post-war that resulted in the change of radioactive dial to the relatively safer tritium dial. The Mark XI was mainly supplied to the RAF, FAA (Fleet Air Arm), RAAF (Royal Australian Air Force) and RNZAF (Royal New Zealand Air Force). It was produced in relatively small numbers, being a simple, robust and functional timepiece, it is one of the highly sought after military 'tool' watches in the market. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 170

An 1876 pattern, Martini Henry socket bayonet, complete with scabbard. Dated stamped ‘/89’ to the forte for 1889, and the ‘WD’ war department stamp and broad arrow mark. There is a cross through number, which appears to be ‘707..’ and a letter R, which may mean Reserve. There is also a BR inspection stamp, which would indicate that it’s been back for repair at some point. The scabbard is of leather construction, with a black painted steel throat and chape, with the throat being war department and inspection stamped, as well as the leather also having an embossed stamp. The bayonet blade is of triangular form, with the usual blunt cutting edges, on account that it was a lunging weapon rather than cutting. Blade length approximately 54.6cm, overall length in scabbard is approximately 65cm. Condition: some service and age related wear. The blade area has overall surface rust spotting, but it may be possible to improve this. The socket section has a dark colour, but is complete and would work as originally intended. The scabbard is complete, but there are 2 areas of splitting to the seam along the edge.

Lot 145

An interwar / WW2 era British 5’’ MK.V Heliograph signal mirror, with original leather carry case.Made from blackened brass and marked ‘AIM HELIO 5’’ MARK V No B 30502’ and a broad arrow mark. The leather carry case is similarly marked ‘HELIO 5’’ MK.V AIM’.Complete with 2 mirrors, sight, and base for attaching tripod legs (legs absent). The leather case is complete with its leather retaining strap to keep the lid in place, but the 2 belt loops that would be attached to reverse are absent.Notes: used from the Boer War era and through WW2, but there are no apparent dates to either the Heliograph or case on this example.Condition: generally good. Some normal wear to the black painted metal, but nothing to its detriment. Both mirrors and the sight are intact. The leather case is in good order, but as mentioned in the description, the belt loops are missing.Tripod legs absent, as per description.

Lot 119

2 x WW2 era British Mark III compasses, one complete with its original leather case. Both by ‘T.G.Co Ltd London’, with one dated for 1944, and the other for 1945, with broad arrow marks. Both examples are manufactured in brass with blackened finish. Mother of pearl dials, with hinged lid and glass bar guards. The leather case is of standard form, dated 1944, and made by F.Ltd. Condition: some service and age related wear. One example shows more wear, with a good proportion of the blackened finish now worn away. The same example also shows a little degradation to the inside seal area of the glass window in the lid. Both compasses would appear to be operational, and work as they should. The leather case is also in good order, with just a little service wear.

Lot 173

A Northumberland Fusiliers interest MKII 1888 pattern Lee Metford bayonet and scabbard. Of standard form, with wooden slab grips secured by 2 large brass rivets, and the cleaning rod channel bored into the pommel. The scabbard is the usual black leather, with steel throat and chape, the former having an oval frog stud. The ricasso is marked with the broad arrow and ‘x’ bend test mark. The opposite side of the ricasso is marked for Wilkinson, London, and has a the ER and crown mark for King Edward VII. Notes: the bayonet appears to have been issued several times in its working life, with the earliest date of ‘02’ stamped for 1902, followed by a 3, likely for 1903, and even a ‘15 for 1915. The leather scabbard also has a date stamp, but it’s difficult to tell if it’s ‘13 or ‘18. The pommel is marked in 2 places for the Northumberland Fusiliers, one saying ‘1/7 NF’ and the other ‘7.NF’. The 7th Battalion (Territorial Force) was based in Alnwick in the pre WW1 era, and by September 1914 was redesignated as 1/7th battalion, which fits perfectly with the battalion and date marks found on the piece. Condition: generally good, with some age and service wear. The steel to the pommel and cross guard has darkened with age, and there is some surface rust speckling to the throat and chape areas. There are some shallow knocks or indentations to the wooden grips, but these are otherwise intact. The blade is generally clean and bright, with normal track lines along the length from it being withdrawn from the scabbard many times. The leather on the scabbard is good, and the push button release catch on the pommel works as it should.

Lot 174

A North Staffordshire Regiment interest MKI type 2 1888 pattern Lee Metford bayonet and scabbard. Of usual form, with wooden grips secured by 2 large brass rivets, and the cleaning rod channel bored through the wood in the grip. The scabbard is the usual black leather, with steel throat and chape, the former having an oval frog stud. The ricasso is marked with the broad arrow and bend test ‘x’ mark. Notes: the bayonet would appear to have been issued multiple times in its working life. There are various dates stamped into the ricasso on one side, with ‘03’ for 1903 being the earliest, followed by ‘04 and ‘05. The pommel is also profusely marked, with it showing that the bayonet was issued to 3 different regiments; the 6th North Staffordshire Regiment (6.NSTF), the Royal Welsh Fusiliers (RWF), and the 4th Royal Fusiliers - City of London Regiment (4RF). Condition: generally solid, but wear to the blade. Some darkening to the steel on the pommel and cross guard, and some surface rust spotting to the chape and throat on the scabbard. Small split to the seam on the leather of the scabbard. The blade appears to have been nickel plated in the past, and this has degraded from the tip to around halfway up the blade. It also appears to have been heated at some point. The push button release catch works exactly as it should. Some sympathetic restoration may be possible to improve the blade.

Lot 150

A WW2 military compass, webbing case, and nickel Elgin military pocket watch with heavy gauge sterling silver watch chain and T-bar. To include: a MKIII compass by T.G.& Co Ltd, dated 1940, with the serial number of 24070. The compass is complete with its original 1940 dated webbing pouch, which is ink stamped ‘MECo 1940’ along with a broad arrow mark. Plus, a military pocket watch by Elgin, with black dial and subsidiary dial at the 6 o’clock position. Marked with broad arrow to the back cover, and the serial number ‘T.K.5518’. Some sources suggest the T.K refers to the Tank Corps, but we have no concrete evidence that backs up this claim. The watch is fitted with an earlier heavy gauge sterling silver graduated Albert watch chain. Each link carries the lion sterling mark, and the T bar is hallmarked for Birmingham 1897, with the makers mark of E.Whitehouse & Son. The watch chain is 0.9cm at its widest point, and weighs 1.95 ozt / 60.5g. Condition: some faults. The compass has a little normal cosmetic service wear to the black painted brass, but this is nothing that detracts. There appears to have been a leak to the internal fluid, and the mother of pearl dial does not move freely. The webbing pouch for the compass is complete, and shows normal servcie wear / soiling. The pocket watch would not appear to run, even fully wound. There is browning to the underside of the glass front, but the case and watch watch is in good order. The silver Albert chain is in good condition, and can easily be removed from the watch if desired.

The lid is made from the base of another 1915 dated Howitzer shell, with handle being made from 4 x .303 bullets. Approximately 13.2cm width, 12.5cm height. Condition: generally good. Notes: Benjamin Arthur Lowe was born on May 4th 1924, and enlisted for service on June 15th 1944. Very little information regarding his WW2  service is available, but his RoyL Artillery tracer card is available to view online, which charts his progress through the 195 Field Regiment RA, 23 Para Light Anti-Aircraft / Anti-Tank Regiment, 158 Para Field Regiment, and 159 Para Field Regiment. His trade on enlisted is noted as being an ‘Aircraft Worker’ in his pocket book The book also contains dates and locations of his parachute jumps, but these start in the very early post war era of June 1945, through to August 1947, in locations such as Chaklala, India, and Palestine. The items have been consigned by Gunnner Lowe’s family, having been in their possession since he left the services. Condition: generally very good. Both blouses remain in very good clean condition, with one example having just a tiny moth hole to the bottom of one of the breast pockets, and what appears to be a field repair to the waist strap. The attached printed insignia haas normal fading / soiling to the surface from service wear. The medals remain in mint condition and appear to have never been worn (it’s understood that his medals were never claimed after WW2, and the family later applied for them). The paperwork and sewing kit show age and service wear, but nothing to its detriment.

This comprises illustrations from the first three books of the Ramayana.
