Lot 843

John Bell (English, 1812-1895), a large and rare English patinated bronze model of the Eagle Slayer, cast by Coalbrookdale, late 19th century, the heroically nude figure standing on a naturalistically cast base with a sheep and tree trunk, inscribed Bell fecit to the maquette, and stamped COALBROOKDALE to the reverse, approximately 82cm highVictorian Neoclassical sculptor John Bell first showed a version of the 'Eagle Shooter', probably in plaster, at the 1837 Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. It is listed in the exhibition catalogue of that year as entry 1176, accompanied by an anonymous poem, which reads: 'A moment more the shaft is sped, with lightening speed and steady aim A moment more the feathers' red, in the best blood the wretch can claim' The subject matter which inspired the model is Aesop's fable of the eagle and the shepherd boy. The eagle kills a lamb, and in revenge the shepherd boy slays the eagle using an arrow made of the bird's own feather. The Eagle Slayer was a highly successful model, and a large version in cast iron, also from the Coalbrookdale foundry, was shown at The Great Exhibition in 1851. That version is in the collection of the V&A, London. Bell was a prolific sculptor, whose most famous commissions include the 1856 Wellington Monument (Guildhall, London), the Crimean War memorial (Woolwich, also 1856), and the 'America' group that graces the base of the Albert Memorial. During his lifetime, Prince Albert had also been a patron of the sculptor. The renowned foundry of Coalbrookdale was known primarily for its production of cast iron statuary and ornament, and the present lot is a rare work executed in bronze bearing this foundry's stamp.  PLEASE NOTE: this lot is 82cm high, and not 32 as stated in the printed catalogue. It is 'large', as described.   Condition Report: PLEASE NOTE: this lot is 82cm high, and not 32 as stated in the printed catalogue. It is 'large', as described. It appears that this model would have had a bow or possibly a baton (as in some versions) in the arm aloft, this is not present at Dreweatts. The glossy mid-brown patina has some areas of uneven wear - please see images for details,There are no obvious breaks or joinsPlease see additional images for visual reference to condition  Condition Report Disclaimer

The bold contrast between the dial colour and the subsidiary dials makes this model instantly recognisable and as such it has long been lauded as a design icon. The 6263, a stainless steel model with screw-down pushers remained in production for nearly 20 years. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Rolex. A stainless steel automatic calendar bracelet watch with dual time zoneModel: GMT Master 'Pepsi'Reference: 16750Date: Circa 1980Movement: 27-jewel Cal.3075 automatic, free-sprung Glucydor microstella balance, adjusted to 5 positions & temperature, No.074****Dial: Black, luminous dot hour markers, baton quarters, outer minute divisions, magnified date aperture at 3, polished Mercedes hands with luminous inserts, centre seconds, arrow tipped dual time zone handCase: Brushed and polished tonneau form, screw down back and shouldered crown, blue and red 'Pepsi' bezel insert, No.725****Strap/Bracelet: Fitted brushed 93150 Oyster link, 593 end linksBuckle/Clasp: Signed folding claspSigned: Case, dial & movementSize: 39mmFootnotes:Launched in 1979/80 to replace the well-loved 1675, the transitional 16750 is so similar to its predecessor that it takes a keen eye to appreciate the nuances that separate these two models. The main differences can be summed up as a new, more accurate calibre (3075), double the depth rating, a quick set sequence to the date function and a different layering of the hands. The reference was in production for around 8 years before being phased out. This example features the earlier matte dial which were later replaced for glossy versions. As these often were changed during servicing it is uncommon to find 16750s with the earlier dial type thus making the current lot a great example of its model. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Rolex. A rare 'Barn Find' stainless steel automatic calendar dual time watch with bakelite bezelModel: GMT MasterReference: 6524Date: 1957Movement: 25-jewel Cal.1030 automatic, Glucydur balance, adjusted to 5 positions & temperature, No.N69****Dial: Originally black gilt, luminous dot hour markers, baton quarters, outer gilt minute divisions, magnified date aperture at 3, gilt Mercedes hands with luminous inserts, centre seconds, arrow tipped red dual time zone handCase: Brushed and polished tonneau form, screw down back, inside back stamped I.57, blue and red 'Pepsi' bakelite bezel, No.262***Signed: Case, dial & movementSize: 38mmFootnotes:The model 6542 was manufactured from 1954 until 1959 and is distinguishable from its replacements by the lack of guards to protect the crown. Originally designed to enable PanAm pilots to see two different time-zones at a glance, the Rolex GMT soon became favoured among business travellers in general. This reference found further fame around 5 years after Rolex finished production; this time on the wrist of Honour Blackmans Pussy Galore in the James Bond movie Goldfinger. The early models are immediately recognisable by their bright bakelite bezels as with the current example. The delicate nature of bakelite and the radium radioactivity of the luminous numbering meant many were replaced during their lifetime leaving those in original condition very rare. This rarity is further defined by the short production period of the reference as a whole. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Rolex. A fine and rare stainless steel manual wind chronograph wristwatch with exotic 'Paul Newman' dialModel: Cosmograph Daytona 'Paul Newman'Reference: 6239Date: Circa 1968Movement: 17-jewel Cal.722-1 manual wind, free-sprung Glucydur microstella balance, adjusted to 3 positions, column wheel chronographDial: Cream, applied polished baton hour markers to black surround, outer red 1/5th second divisions, black subsidiary dials at 3, 6 and 9 for seconds, 30 minute and 12 hour recording, polished baton hands with luminous inserts, white arrow tipped centre chronograph handCase: Brushed and polished tonneau form, screw down back, screw down crown flanked by twin pushers, tachymetre to bezel, No.200****Strap/Bracelet: Brown leather Buckle/Clasp: Signed steel buckleSigned: Case, dial & movement, case stamped C.R.SSize: 36mm Accompaniments: Rolex pouch Footnotes:First appearing in the early 1960s, this 'exotic' dial manufactured by Singer was renamed the 'Paul Newman' by collectors after the American actor wore the watch in promotional posters for the film 'Winning' and throughout his private life. By sinking the subsidiary dials and outer scale within the opaque black dial background, the dial achieves an unusual three-dimensionality and an instantly recognisable look.Arguably no other watch has ever captured the imagination of the collector's world in the same way that the Paul Newman Rolex Daytona has. In recent years this model in all its different incarnations has built up an almost mythical reputation. With its iconic design and the photos on Paul Newman's wrist the exotic Daytona dial truly represents the dream of watch collecting. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
