Lot 301

An important French Napoleonic bronze Pierrier cannon dated 1804 model 1786, the base ring inscribed “Fecit de J’ - Denis”, “an. 12” (1804) and the swell of the muzzle features a large feathered arrow. Further inscribed on the trunnions, one side bearing the gun’s weight, "173" French pounds and the other ‘No. 222’. 40½in. (103cm.) long, bore 2 7/8in. (7.3cm.). *The year "an.12" if from the French Republican Calendar which lasted for thirteen years from late 1793 until 1805. The model 1786 is regarded as the first French standardized swivel gun and remained in use by the French Navy until 1854. Pierrier’s were relatively short guns, this example measuring 40½in. (103cm.) firing medium weight (1lb), solid shot, designed for close range engagement. In this period, bronze cannons were preferable but more costly in material and time to produce, thus only a small percentage of cannons made in France were bronze, most were of iron. Consequently, any bronze artillery of this age is rare since many were melted down and the valuable metal recast as required for later conflicts. *Good condition.

Longines: A stainless steel manual wind military issue wristwatchModel: Dirty DozenReference: 23088Date: Circa 1945Movement: Cal.12.68Z 15 jewel, manual, number 6964208Dial: Black, Arabic hour markers with luminous dots, white outer minutes track, subsidiary seconds at 6, replacement polished gold pointed hands with luminous insertsCase: Brushed tonneau form, stepped bezel, pull-out crown, screw-down back engraved 23088/1222 ↑ WWW F4946Strap/Bracelet: Associated stainless expanding braceletSize: 37mmFootnote:During the Second World War the British Ministry of Defence commissioned 12 watch companies to produce watches that were fit for military action. These companies were Buren, Cyma, Eterna, Grana, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Lemania, Longines, IWC, Omega, Record, Timor, and Vertex. The term 'Dirty Dozen', after the 1967 film, has been coined to describe these watches. It is estimated that approximately 150,000 watches were produced with around 8,000 examples delivered by Longines. Each was stamped with the military broad arrow mark and the initials WWW standing for 'Watch, Wrist, Waterproof'. The Longines model has latterly become known as the ‘Greenlander’, although the watch was never issued for the British North Greenland Expedition and the name derives from an erroneous attribution in a military watch book, as the author believed that the model was worn by soldiers on this expedition.Condition:Case and back: Micro-abrasions, small scratches and tiny dints, consistent with age and use.Crystal: Some small scratches.Dial: Fair to good with some tiny losses to print. Lume possibly re-touched.Hands: Replacements - fair condition with tip of minute hand slightly bent.Strap: Minor signs of wear.Movement: Winds, sets and runs.Unless otherwise stated, all watches are likely to have been serviced and/or repaired in their lifetime and may have had parts replaced. While a watch may be described as 'working' at the time of the report, they are not guaranteed for timekeeping - it is advised that all watches are inspected and serviced by a qualified jeweller or horologist before full use.

GEORGE SPENCER WATSON ROI, RP, ARA, RA (1869-1934) 'My Lady of the Rose,' a portrait of Hilda Spencer Watson, seated three quarter length, wearing a red tunic dress and fur stole, holding a fur muff, and wearing a gold braid belt, signed with initials, oil on canvas, 43 1/2 x 33 1/2 in. Exhibited: The Royal Academy, 1911 no.368 Bermondsey Settlement Picture Exhibition, 1913.Provenance: William Harold Gardiner, ; Joan Gardiner (in Australia); Robin Tassell, of Dovehouse Stanwick, Northants; Richard Thompson & Mary Spencer Watson; Thence by descent. The symbolic title for the portrait 'My Lady of the Rose' reflects the artist's deep reverence for Hilda. The symbolism of the Rose as a symbol of love but also of new beginnings, an appropriate theme for the portrait painted in 1909, to celebrate his marriage to the sitter. The figures in the background perhaps reflect both the sitter and artist's interest in mythology and the arts. A winged figure fires an arrow which strikes another figure on whose belt the artist has signed his initials. In this intensely personal portrait, a subtle representation perhaps of the artist love-struck for his wife.Hilda's father William Gardiner was a leading businessman who had established a successful trading business between London and Sydney. His daughter, Hilda, was, according to a contemporary within her circle, 'a charismatic person, tall, intense and nerveuse ... in every memory of her Hilda stands out as striking, and eventful'. Known affectionately as 'Ginger', Hilda was a classical violinist trained in Europe. As a dancer and mime artist, Hilda was heavily influenced by the free form Greek style of Loie Fuller and Isadora Duncan. Her passion for dancing continued until the end of her life. She regularly organised and took part in performances both in London and later in the theatre that she built at Dunshay Manor, the Spencer Watsons's home on the Isle of Purbeck.'My Lady of the Rose' can be compared with another by the artist of the same sitter (bequeathed in 2007 to The Tate Gallery by the artist's daughter Mary Spencer Watson) titled 'Hilda and Maggie', painted in 1911. For another portrait of her cf. Christies, 15 Dec 2010. Lot 144 'Hilda in a Black Hat'.

This particular example is extremely unusual in that it appears to be a re-drawn version, perhaps made as a cheaper production. Several court cards are mirror copies of the first edition and a few are altogether different. Generally the designs are not as well drawn as those in the original version. The colours have been reduced to just black and red, and the versos are without the gilt of the original. Dudley Ollis noted that he was unaware of any other example like this.

A SPARE ENGLAND INTERNATIONAL RUGBY UNION JERSEY BADGE CIRCA 1908 with embroidered English rose from the archive John Guy Gilberne Birkett (1884-1967). Of rectangular form, 13 x 11cms and with fine cotton embroidery in seven colours. Superb condition. On the reverse there appears to be a faded red stamp with a broad-arrow and a number ‘2’ with script in a banner below within an impressed outline of a heart. We are unsure of the purpose of this ‘spare’ rose and have discussed various theories such as whether the broad-arrow on the back has military connotations or whether the heart may have a connection with the heart-shaped design on his Colvin-House School rugby jersey. Or whether simply it was sent to John as a replacement or spare badge from the RFU. We do know that during the first part of the twentieth century England badges were sent to players to stitch on themselves. However, this badge does not appear to have been stitched to a jersey. Regardless, it is a rare and splendid object, and the embroidery is of high quality.Provenance: the original vendors of the Birkett Sporting Archive were the great grandsons of J G G Birkett (1884-1967), and the great-great-grandsons of Reg Birkett, the badge has been in private hands for two years since the Birkett archive was auction at Rogers Jones & Co

Lot 171

A LARGE BLUE AND WHITE SIX-TUBE ARROW VASE, TOUHU, MING DYNASTY, TL TESTED 明代青花投壺式瓶Please note this Lot is to be sold at No Reserve. 本拍品不設底價Scientific Analysis Report: A thermoluminescence analysis report issued by Oxford Authentication on 15 February 2024, based on sample number P124b27, sets the firing date of two samples taken between 400 and 600 years ago, and hence is consitent with the dating of this lot. A copy of the report, signed by Helen Mason for Oxford Authentication, accompanies this lot.Expert’s note: The six small and rather unusual lion heads applied on the shoulder of the present vase once suspended bronze rings, which have long been lost to time. It is possible that these rings were used to keep score when playing touhu with this vase, since there is exactly one lion head for each of the six arrow tubes.China, 16th to early 17th century. The pear-shaped body supported on a waisted foot and rising to a slender neck, the mouth applied with six tubular arrow holes, the shoulder with six pierced lion heads. Finely decorated to the exterior in shades of cobalt blue with scholarly figures and their attendants inside a fenced garden with large willows, below a band of ruyi heads at the shoulder. The Ming-dynasty Emperor Xuande was known to be quite fond of the game, as evidenced by a painting of him playing touhu by Shan Xi (in the Palace Museum, Beijing). Players threw arrows into bronze or ceramic vases with narrow tubular necks at prescribed intervals, each player equidistant from the vase. The winner successfully projected all his arrows into the vase and the loser was forced to drink at each miss. Elaborate rituals and intricate rules, recorded in the Li Ji (Book of Rites), added further complexity to the game. Puzzling pitching techniques were described in the Touhu Yijie (Ceremonial Usages and Rules of Touhu), an illustrated manual written by Wang Ti (1490-1530), and these shots were given fancy names, like ‘A Pair of Dragons Enters the Sea’ when two arrows were thrown from a great height at once into the vase. The touhu game was used to practice archery, one of the essential accomplishments of a gentleman. Later in the Ming era, the game became more widespread, being played by rich merchants as well as the aristocracy and scholarly elite. A scene in the famous late Ming novel Jin Ping Mei (Plum Blossom in the Golden Vase), written in 1619, describes the wealthy merchant Ximen Qing's seduction of his concubine Panjinlian. She becomes inebriated while playing touhu on a picnic and the game leads to an amorous encounter. AN ARCHAISTIC BRONZE ARROW VASE, LATE SONG TO EARLY MING DYNASTY 宋末至明初仿古貫耳銅壺Please note this Lot is to be sold at No Reserve. 本拍品不設底價Expert's note: The patina on this vessel is predominantly artifical, as expected from an ancient archaistic bronze. In fact, it is a masterpiece of patina-imitation, is itself now at least half a millennium old, and thence has also acquired a natural patina of ist own. This of course make its distinction from entirely naturally grown patinas even harder to discern.China, 13th-14th century. Finely modeled, the slender pear-shaped body rising from a short spreading foot, the shoulder flanked by a pair of tubular lug handles. Well cast to the exterior with archaistic designs, the upper body and shoulder with pendent cicada leaves enclosing taotie and ruyi motifs below a band of interlocked dragons, each against a leiwen ground. The foot with two small apertures.Inscriptions: To the interior of the neck, ‘[…] zhi bao hu’ (‘The precious hu by […]’).Provenance: London trade.Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and casting flaws, few minuscule nicks and tiny dents.
