A Large & Important Biot's Polariscope By Lerebours a Paris, standing on a large (9 inches diameter) base, with a tall column supporting body of instrument on an adjustable inclining mount, body constructed in such a way that all of the parts are interchangeable, each section with a silver collar onto which is engraved a scale, where the scales fit the corresponding collar has an engraved arrow to show the degree of rotation, two specimen mounts made of a silver metal are also engraved with a scale around the edge, large silver disks each have a scale engraved around the edge, top mirror is plain black glass and can assume any inclination with respect to the axis of the tube and can rotate around it with a similar mirror at the bottom, mirror at the bottom has both a black glass mirror and a stack of plate glass on the other side, final accessory is a holder for various eyepieces which are engraved 'Quartz perpendicular', 'Quartz Parallel' and 'Bi Quartz a 2 Rotations de Soleil', height when inclined at 45deg 74cm, body length 26cm, base diameter 23cm Jean Baptiste Biot (1774-1862) designed this form of polariscope to demonstrate polarization by reflection discovered by Malus in 1808 before the invention of Nicol prism in 1828. Noël Marie Paymal Lerebours (16 February 1807 – 23 July 1873) was a French optician and daguerreotypist. He formed a partnership with Marc Secretan in 1845, the firm then being known as Lerebours et Secretan. Later polariscopes of this size were made but they used a Nicol prism. The complexity and size of this instrument suggests that it was used at the forefront of research into polarised light and is a rare survivor from an early period.

Seleukid Empire, Antiochos I Soter AR Tetradrachm. Smyrna, circa 281-261 BC. Diademed head right / Apollo Delphios seated left on omphalos, testing arrows and resting on grounded bow; ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ to right, ΑΝΤΙΟΧΟΥ to left, NK and ΩΣ monograms in exergue. SC 311.4; WSM 1496. 17.08g, 30mm, 12h. Good Extremely Fine; a stunning coin both stylistically and in terms of preservation. Extremely Rare. Antiochos I was the son of Seleukos I and Apama, Seleukos' Persian wife. His date of birth is unknown, but was probably circa 320 BC as he was old enough to lead the Seleukid cavalry at the battle of Ipsos in 301. When Seleukos was assassinated in 281, Antiochos was probably in Ekbatana or Aï Khanoum, where he had maintained court ruling the eastern satrapies on behalf of his father since 294. With his accession, Antiochos faced immediate attacks by Ptolemy II in Asia Minor and revolts of the cities of Syria. He left his eldest son, Seleukos, as governor of the eastern satrapies and marched west to meet the threats, which he soon overcame. However, it was not long before his attention was once again drawn to disturbances, this time from a menacing force of warlike Celtic tribes that had crossed over the Hellespont in the winter of 278/7 and invaded Asia Minor, and also shortly thereafter renewed hostilities with Ptolemy II (First Syrian War, 274-271 BC). After defeating the Celts and receiving the title of Saviour (Soter) by the Greek cities of Asia Minor, Antiochos concluded an uneasy truce with Ptolemy which allowed him to focus on public relations and administrative work in Asia Minor. His subsequent reign was relatively peaceful, with the exceptions of sedition by his son and co-regent, Seleukos, whom he was forced to execute and replace with his younger son, the future Antiochos II, and the loss of northwest Asia Minor to Eumenes I of Pergamon. The tetradrachms of Antiochos from Smyrna are of two iconographic types, one with an elderly but god-like portrait, and the other with rejuvenated, powerful and idealized features, as on this coin. Likewise there are differences in the details of the reverse: on the former, Apollo holds but a single arrow, on the latter either two or three arrows. The figure of Apollo seated on the omphalos gained prominence under Antiochos, publicising his supposed descent from the god, and became the characteristic reverse type for most Seleukid precious metal coinage down through the reign of Antiochos IV.

Privately purchased from Numismatic Fine Arts in 1989. Issos was situated on a strategic coastal plain along the Pinarus river, through which ran the highway linking east and west Cilicia. In 333 BC, it was the site of Alexander the Great’s decisive victory over Darios III of Persia.
A rare Swiss or South German Renaissance small iron chamber clock Unsigned, first half of the 17th century The two train weight-driven movement with verge escapement regulated by balance wheel contained within the frame, the strike train with countwheel released via single arbor warnless nag s head lifting against a star wheel mounted behind the dial incorporating a friction clutch to allow setting of the hand and with overlift provided by a shaped cam cut with a slot for locking, both trains pivoted between iron vertical bars which locate via tenons into slots cut into a horizontal strip at the base, the top secured with another strip terminating with angled end forged with pierced tenon at the front and integral lug at the rear passing through slots in the uprights and secured by wedges, the polychrome painted iron box-form case with a single lugged bell supported within domed bearer, the front with black ground starburst painted centre and cut steel arrow-shaped hand reading against a cream painted chapter ring with Gothic Roman numerals within architectural panel painted with stylised pilasters flanking a blue shield incorporating trident and circle motif within a red field above the dial, the top with integral scroll pierced fret and the sides with hinged doors secured by sprung clasps, the rear with forged hanging hoop and spurs, (escapement restored), 28cm (11ins) high. Provenance: The estate of Michael Hurst. The general construction and layout of the current lot can be directly compared to a spring-driven example illustrated in Bassermann-Jordan, Ernst von THE BOOK OF OLD CLOCKS AND WATCHES (English version translated by H. Alan Lloyd) on page 203 which is described as probably made in Zurich about 1630-40. The basic construction of the movement frame (formed essentially as a vertical rectangular loop around the movement) has its roots in the earliest form of domestic striking clock and can be directly compared with a clock dating to around 1500 illustrated in Muhle, Richard and Vogel, Horand M. Alte Uhren (Verlag Georg D.W. Callway, Munchen 1976) on page 152 (figure 256). Other related weight-driven clocks are illustrated by Bassermann-Jordan on page 106 (Fig. 80) and in Edwardes, Ernest L. Weight-driven Chamber Clocks of the Middle Ages and Renaissance Plates 31 and 32. The provision of a star wheel behind the hour wheel for strike lifting (rather than via a pin applied to the going train greatwheel) and a friction clutch for setting the hand (without the need to release the escapement and run the going train through) would suggest a date after 1600 (similar details had only really become standardised on English Lantern clocks from around 1610).

The firm of Negretti & Zambra are recorded in Banfield, Edwin BAROMETER MAKERS AND RETAILERS 1660-1900 as being established in 1850 when a partnership between Enrico Negretti and Joseph Warren Zambra was formed. The firm became one of the most prolific makers of scientific instruments and continued trading well into the 20th century.
