The Property of a Gentleman A FINE PAIR OF 22 BORE SILVER-MOUNTED FLINTLOCK HOLSTER PISTOLS BY JOHN COSENS, CIRCA 1690 with very minor differences, with tapering barrels formed in four stages, moulded girdles, octagonal then polygonal breeches, the forward sections signed ~I.Cosens~ ahead of a chiselled acanthus moulding and with panels of foliage and beadwork, the rear sections with contrasting classical warriors in the centre framed by monsterhead scrolls, struck with the barrelsmith~s mark and London view and proof marks on the left, border-engraved tangs decorated with scrolling foliage inhabited by an exotic bird, border-engraved rounded locks decorated with cupids on the tails, one brandishing a falchion and the other aiming an arrow, decorated beneath the pans with curved slender panels en suite with the breeches and signed beneath a monsterhead scroll, chiselled cocks decorated with monsterhead scrolls, the pans each with a monsterhed on the brim, chiselled steels (the tip of one steel with a small chip, the engraving on one lock refreshed), full figured stocks, perhaps ash or elm, lightly carved with scrolls and swelling about the rear ramrod-pipes, the tangs enclosed by raised mouldings framed by scrolls, silver mounts comprising pierced side-plates decorated with monsterhead terminals centring on a green man mask, spurred pommels with grotesque mask caps, iron trigger-guards with foliate terminals and engraved with strawberry foliage on the bows, a pair of moulded silver ramrod-pipes, moulded iron escutcheons formed as a gaping mask each charged in the centre with the owner~s crest, and original iron-capped ramrods 30.7 cm; 12 1/8 in barrels (2) The crest is that of Philipson. One likely candidate is Christopher Philipson (1646-1709), of Crook Hall, Member of Parliament for Westmoreland in 1679. Philipson served as a Royalist militia officer and assisted Daniel Fleming in breaking up a Quaker meeting at Windermere in 1675. He replaced Sir John Lowther III as the honourable member for Westmorland in the second Exclusion Parliament. For his efforts he was rewarded with a knighthood by Charles II in 1681 as ~a person of known loyalty and affection~, he was foreman of the grand jury which presented a loyal address after the Rye House Plot. John Cosens, said to have leant ~ye arte [of gunmaking] in ye City of Winchester~, was admitted to the Freedom of the Gunmakers~ Company on 14th August 1662. By 1664 he was in business and received payments from the Ordnance board for the manufacture and repair of matchlock and snaphaunce arms during the period 1666-80. In 1670 he took over Harman Barne~s shop in the Strand from his widow and he became Gunmaker in Ordinary to Charles II before 1669. The Wardrobe Account for 1680 shows that he delivered three pairs of pistols and one gun for £29 and in the same year he supplied pistols and one gun |stocked with asshe| for £8 as part of the King~s presents for the Emperor of Morocco. The last reference to him is on 4th August 1698 when he was fined ten shillings for proving a birding barrel belonging to John May who was not entitled to have barrels proved. See Neal and Back 1984, p. 139 and Blackmore 1999, pp. 58-9.
A late 19th century French ormolu figural "chariot" mantel clock after the model by Frédéric-Eugène Piat, the eight-day countwheel bell striking movement stamped indistinctly *R *501, with slender white enamel Roman numeral chapter ring forming the rim of a six-spoke chariot wheel of the case "Chérubins assis dans un char tiré par un tigre", modelled as a Bacchic scene with seated satyr in leopard drawn chariot, attended by three putti, over a naturalistic scroll cast base signed "E Piat", the whole resting on conforming scroll mounted ebonised base, the case with Arrow foundry mark to underside of satyr's foot and stamped indistinctly also to interior of rear case door, 60cms high, 78.5cms wide. Frédéric-Eugène Piat (1827-1903) was artistic director of the Maison Marchand producing designs primarily in bronze for clocks, fireplace furniture, sculpture and fountains. Perhaps his most famous creation- in association with Maison Millet Paris- was the "Grande Horloge"- a monumental clock in ormolu, bronze and Carrara marble standing 270cms high. The Saint-Loup museum of fine arts in Troyes, Champagne-Ardenne, holds the largest collection of his artwork and designs. Condition Report: Movement is compete and in working order although a precautionary service/clean is advised. The chapter ring has probably become detached and has been re-attached using superglue with some adhesive fingerprints being left on the the enamel surface otherwise ring appears undamaged. The hands are probably replacements. The case is in fine condition with minimal wear/discolouration.Clock is complete with a pendulum and winding key.Condition Report Disclaimer
Far East Hunter’s Sword 20 inch, single edged, slightly curved blade widening towards the point. Brass ferrule. Large curved, polished, hardwood grip ... 1944 dated, issue machete. 14 1/2 inch, wide blade stamped “JJB1944” with broad arrow. Fibre slab grips secured by 5 copper rivets. Both items with some rusting. 2 items.
1945 Dated Indian Issue Kukri 12 inch, single edged blade of typical form. Narrow fuller. The forte stamped with maker “GMW” and dated “45”. Wooden slab grips (broken to one side), secured by two steel rivets. Flat, steel pommel. Contained in its leather covered, wooden scabbard with darkened brass chape. Leather stamped “1945” with broad arrow.
2nd Pattern Fairbairn & Sykes “B2” Marked Commando Knife 6 3/4 inch, double edged, blackened blade. Blackened, oval crossguard stamped “B2” with broad arrow. Darkened copper/ brass checkered grip. Steel securing nut. Contained in its leather scabbard with top belt flap removed. Leather retaining tabs removed. Copper/brass, square end chape.
3rd Pattern Fairbairn & Sykes Commando Fighting Knife 6 3/4 inch, double edged blade. Blackened steel, oval crossguard. Alloy ribbed grip stamped with small 8 and broad arrow. Top, brass securing nut. Contained in its dark brown, leather scabbard with lower brass chape. Minor rusting to steel.

A total of 15000 were made by Vertex and the watches are easily identified by the 3 Ws on the backplate which stand for Watch, Wrist, Waterproof. This example is in good original condition.
