Conceived as a replacement for the traditional T-Series MGs and launched in 1955, the MGA combined a rigid chassis with the Austin-designed, 1,489cc engine that had first appeared in the ZA Magnette. The overhead valve B-Series unit produced 68bhp (later 72bhp) at 5,500rpm on twin SU carburettors. Running gear was based on that of the TF, with independent front suspension and a live rear axle, but as far as its road manners were concerned the far superior MGA was in an entirely different league. Clad in a stylish aerodynamic body and capable of topping 95mph, the MGA proved an instant hit, selling 13,000 units in its first full year of production.This FIA-specification MGA competition roadster was built and raced by the late Ron Cody and has competed in a number of race series over a period of approximately 20 years. During this time the car saw many victories in the Equipe GTS race series. This success led Ron to build, restore and race-prepare cars for other competitors to the same high standard, his engines being both very quick and reliable. Most of the rebuild was carried out in 2015 with further works in 2020.This MGA is powered by a 1,950cc B-Series engine producing 178bhp, notable features of which include an Arrow steel billet crankshaft; Carrillo con-rods; Burgess (special development) cylinder head; Piper (special development) camshaft; and a Weber 48DCO/SP carburettor. Other noteworthy features of this highly developed car include an MGB close-ratio gearbox; Quaife limited-slip differential; alloy front wings; new radiator with thermostatic fan; new electrical switches; new lighting wiring; and up-rated suspension incorporating Koni telescopic dampers. A rare .41" rimfire American Williamson’s Patent derringer pistol with reloadable steel percussion cartridge, 4¾” overall, flat topped round barrel 2½”, the top flat impressed with an arrow pointing forwards, the left side marked “WILLIAMSON’S PAT OCT.2.1866.NEW YORK” (faint); with scroll engraved bronze frame and trigger guard, and simple walnut fullstock with small chequered panels. A carved rock crystal iris brooch, the carved frosted flower head with gold coloured detail, to an 18 carat gold beaded mid section and leaves, with London 18 carat gold import mark, to a copper arrow head terminal, 9.6cm long, 37.6g grossCondition Report: The setting has some light wear commensurate with age and use, the flowerhead moves slightly in the setting, but no noticeable chips or cracks, the brooch pin moves slightly in the hinge. Sampson Mordan, an early Victorian gold mourning pencil, circa 1850, the barrel with scrolled foliate black and pale blue enamel, with In Memory Of in black enamel and inscribed with the name H. Smith, with arrow detail, a purple foil backed clear stone endpiece, the tip marked with an M, 8.5cm long (retracted), 7.7g gross, in a period fitted burgundy leather pencil boxThe arrow detail was generally used on gold pencils by S. Mordan that did not bear the name. The use of light blue enamel in jewellery often denotes a young or unmarried person, however the use here could just be decorative.Condition Report: The condition is very good for its age, there are a few small chips to the enamel, only really noticeable under close inspection. The piece has not been tested for gold standard, but it is reputed that Mordan used 10 carat gold for his pencils and used the arrow mark to denote this, please see Bull. K, The KB Collection of Gold Pencils, private publication, 2012, page 48The lead hole is approximately 1mm diameter, the slider is in good working order. The pencil has no hallmark.
