Pierce the darkness This Oyster Perpetual Explorer II in Oystersteel with an Oyster bracelet features a white dial with an arrow-shaped 24-hour hand and hour markers with a Chromalight display. 24-Hour Bezel Reliability in the toughest conditions The Explorer II is equipped with an additional 24-hour display; a dedicated hand circles the dial in 24 hours rather than the usual 12, pointing to a fixed bezel with 24 hour graduations. This function enables the wearer to distinguish the hours of the day from the hours of the night, an essential feature for those who venture into environments where darkness reigns supreme – such as in the depths of caves, or where the sun never sets – like the polar regions in summer. White dial Distinguishing day from night The Explorer II features a date display, an additional orange 24-hour hand and a fixed bezel with 24-hour graduations, enabling day to be distinguished from night. It became the watch of choice for speleologists, volcanologists and polar explorers. Its hour markers and hands feature a highly-legible Chromalight display with long-lasting blue luminescence. Oystersteel Highly resistant to corrosion Rolex uses Oystersteel for its steel watch cases. Specially developed by the brand, Oystersteel belongs to the 904L steel family, alloys most commonly used in high-technology and in the aerospace and chemical industries, where maximum resistance to corrosion is essential. Oystersteel is extremely resistant, offers an exceptional finish once polished and maintains its beauty even in the harshest environments. The Oyster bracelet Alchemy of form and function The Oyster bracelet is a perfect alchemy of form and function, aesthetics and technology, designed to be both robust and comfortable. It is equipped with an Oysterlock folding clasp, which prevents accidental opening and the Easylink comfort extension link, also exclusive to Rolex. In addition to conventional hour, minute and seconds hands, the GMT-Master II features an arrow-tipped hand, which circles the dial once every 24 hours, as well as a bidirectional rotatable 24-hour graduated bezel. The distinctively coloured 24-hour hand displays the “home” reference time in a first time zone which can be read on the graduations on the bezel. The traveller’s local time is easily set by “jumping” from hour to hour, thanks to an ingenious mechanism operated via the winding crown: the hour hand can be adjusted forwards or backwards independently of the minute and seconds hands. This allows travellers to adapt to their new time zone without affecting the precision of their timekeeping. Black dial High legibility in all circumstances Like all Rolex Professional watches, the GMT-Master II offers exceptional legibility in all circumstances, and especially in the dark, thanks to its Chromalight display. The broad hands and hour markers in simple shapes – triangles, circles, rectangles – are filled with a luminescent material emitting a long-lasting glow Everose Rolesor A meeting of two metals Gold is coveted for its lustre and nobility. Steel reinforces strength and reliability. Together, they harmoniously combine the best of their properties. CARTIER: ART DECO DIAMOND BROOCH, CIRCA 1925The slightly curving openwork plaque with arrow-shaped terminals, set throughout with vari-cut diamonds including old brilliant, old pear, baguette, French, Asscher, single and calf, signed Cartier Ltd London, numbered ?304, length 5.9cm, fitted Cartier case Footnotes:ProvenanceMaud Russell (1891-1982)Descent to the current ownerMaud Russell, British art collector and patron, was one of Britain's foremost collectors of French modern art during the 20th century and a stylish and popular society hostess known for her infinite generosity. Maud and her husband, Gilbert Russell, a cousin of the Duke of Bedford, regularly entertained artists, writers, intellectuals, musicians, politicians and society figures at their London home and at their beautiful 2000-acre country estate, Mottisfont Abbey, in Hampshire, now owned by the National Trust. Their numerous friends, to name but a few, included Duff and Lady Diana Cooper, Cecil Beaton, Margot Asquith, Clementine Churchill, members of the Bloomsbury Group, the Souls and Ian Fleming. Fleming's friendship after her husband's death from asthma in 1942 was a vital lifeline during a period of intense grief for Maud.A few years later, Maud's gift of £5000 enabled Fleming, with whomshe worked in Naval Intelligence during the Second World War, to purchase Goldeneye, his retreat in Jamaica, where he created his world-famous spy James Bond. At Mottisfont, where she lived until 1972, Maud commissioned Rex Whistler to paint magnificent tromp l'oeil murals in the drawing room and a mosaic called the Angel of Mottisfont and a mural, by Russian artist, Boris Anrep, (the angel's likeness was modelled on Maud). Other artists Maud sat for during her life include Sir William Nicholson, John Singer Sargent, Ambrose McEvoy, Cecil Beaton and Henri Matisse. Born Maud Nelke, she was the daughter of a wealthy German banker and stockbroker, Paul Nelke, who immigrated to Britain in the 1880s and who later counted Winston Churchill as a client. Her mother Maria was also German, the daughter of Carl Conrad (Director of the Berlin Mint). During the 1930s, as war loomed, Maud helped as many of her relatives escape Germany as she could, bravely visiting Cologne after Kristallnacht in 1938 to see if they needed help and bringing those that wanted to, back to England. After Maud's death, her family discovered she had kept a regular diary throughout her life, which her granddaughter, Emily Russell, spent three years sensitively editing for the book 'A Constant Heart, The War Diaries of Maud Russell, 1938-1945', published by the Dovecote Press. The well written entries reveal the mind of a sensitive and observant woman and are a rare social record of the time. This brooch, given to Maud by her husband, has never been offered on the market before, is being sold by her family.Additional image creditsMaud with Ian Fleming and Angus Menzies at Mottifsont. © Emily Russell.
