The Story of Midget Submarines and Human Torpedoes', White Lion publishing , London 1971 edition and nine other maritime related volumes.*Notes- The X class midget submarines were built for the Royal Navy during 1943-44 by Vickers Armstrong as the next step in submersible warfare from the Chariot manned torpedo. Known individually as 'X- craft', of the twelve vessels delivered in 1944 XT1 to XT6 were built as training craft as denoted by the letter 'T' (i) The First deployment of the X craft was in September 1943 for Operation Source, the attack on the German warships Tirpitz, Lutzow and Scharnhorst based at Kafjord, Nordkapp in Norway. Of the six craft used only two were successful in laying their charges under the Tirpitz (Scharnhorst and Lutzow being out on manoeuvres), crippling the ship and leaving her out of action until May 1944. X craft were also used in Operation Postage Able for Overload, D-day landings taking surveys of the landing beaches. Of the six XT craft two were taken to Aberlady Bay, East Lothian and moored to four anti-tank blocks at the low tide mark as targets for live fire missions by the RAF with experimental explosive cannon shells. Their structures can still be reached during low spring tides. The periscopes fitted to the XT craft were shorter than used on operational craft and also not retractable as the XT craft were built for training purposes only, at less expense and with fewer fittings (ii).* Notes References - i Warren, C, E, T. & Benson, J. Rolex. A stainless steel automatic antimagnetic bracelet watchModel: MilgaussReference: 1019Date: Circa 1979Movement: 26-jewel Cal.1580 automatic, adjusted to 5 positions & temperatures, No.M88****Dial: Black, red Milgauss, polished baton hour markers, outer 1/2 minute markers, polished hands with luminous inserts, red arrow tipped centre secondsCase: Brushed and polished tonneau form, screw down back and crown, soft iron antimagnetic inner cap, inside back stamped II.70, No.616****Strap/Bracelet: Brushed 78360 Oyster linkBuckle/Clasp: Signed folding clasp, stamped OP9Signed: Case, dial & movement Size: 37mm Accompaniments: Rolex box, outer card, International Service Guarantee, swing tag, brochureFootnotes:The Milgauss model was designed for use in areas of high electro-magnetic fields found in laboratories and electro-engineering. In particular it was Rolexs' partnership with the world renowned Nuclear research centre CERN (Centre Européen de Recherche Nucléaire) that resulted in such a technically advanced watch. Its name is derived from the Greek 'Mil' for thousand and 'Gauss', the unit to measure magnetism. A normal watch movement can withstand to 70-90 Gauss whereas the Milgauss keeps its incredibly precision in a magnetic field up to 1000 Gauss. In production from 1966 to 1990, the model was only available in stainless steel with a choice of silvered or black dial. At first glance the Milgauss 1019 can appear rather unassuming when put in comparison with its cousins in the Rolex line up. In fact, during its original production period the enthusiasm for the model was only ever lukewarm. This lower level of success translated into lower production numbers making the model rarer. For the 21st century collector, the 1019 now shines as an example of how Rolex sometimes were ahead in combining design with function. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

It is defined by its gloss black dial with gilt signature and minute track, echoed in colour by the gilt hands. The bezel changed over time and this has the rare early version with no individual minute calibration. The 6mm crown has no crown guards at this period giving it the distinct silhouette of the early submariners. The exceptional preservation of the watch and especially of the case which retains its original tapered bevelled edge makes this a very rare example of this reference. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
Rolex. A stainless steel automatic calendar bracelet watch with dual time zone and gilt dialModel: GMT MasterReference: 1675Date: Circa 1964Movement: 26-jewel Cal.1560 automatic, adjusted to 5 positions & temperatures, No.D80***Dial: Black, luminous dot hour markers, baton quarters, gilt outer minute divisions, magnified date aperture at 3, polished Mercedes hands with luminous inserts, centre seconds, arrow tipped dual time zone handCase: Brushed and polished tonneau form, screw down back and shouldered crown, inside back stamped IV.64, faded blue and red 'pepsi' bezel insert, No.102****Strap/Bracelet: Fitted Jubilee linkBuckle/Clasp: Signed USA folding claspSigned: Case, dial & movement Size: 40mm Accompaniments: Rolex boxFootnotes:The Rolex GMT was launched in 1954 after the Transatlantic Airways company asked Rolex to produce a watch useful for their pilots. It quickly gained favour among the Pan-Am executives and the business jet-set community as a whole.Offered continuously since its introduction with relatively little modification it is perhaps, along with the Submariner, the most classic Rolex 'tool' watch made. The reference 1675 began production 80 years ago in 1960. This was the first GMT Master reference to feature protective crown guards as well as the smaller triangular tip on the second hour hand. The current example features a highly attractive gilt dial. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
Rolex. A fine stainless steel automatic calendar dual time wristwatch with bakelite bezelModel: GMT MasterReference: 6542Date: Circa 1959Movement: 25-jewel Cal.1030 automatic, adjusted to 5 positions & temperature, No.N80****Dial: Tropicalised black gilt, luminous dot hour markers, baton quarters, outer gilt minute divisions, magnified date aperture at 3, gilt Mercedes hands with luminous inserts, centre seconds, arrow tipped red dual time zone handCase: Brushed and polished tonneau form, screw down back, inside back stamped IV.1958, blue and red 'Pepsi' bakelite bezel, No.426***Strap/Bracelet: Fitted folded rivet sprung 6635 Oyster linkBuckle/Clasp: Signed folding claspSigned: Case, dial & movement Size: 38mm Accompaniments: Spare 62523H Oyster link bracelet Footnotes:The model 6542 was manufactured from 1954 until 1959 and is distinguishable from its replacements by the lack of guards to protect the crown. Originally designed to enable PanAm pilots to see two different time-zones at a glance, the Rolex GMT soon became favoured among business travellers in general. This reference found further fame around 5 years after Rolex finished production; this time on the wrist of Honour Blackmans Pussy Galore in the James Bond movie Goldfinger. The early models are immediately recognisable by their bright bakelite bezels as with the current example. The delicate nature of bakelite and the radium radioactivity of the luminous numbering meant many were replaced during their lifetime leaving those in original condition very rare. This rarity is further defined by the short production period of the reference as a whole. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
