A JAPANESE BRONZE OMIKONO OF AN ARCHER BY THE MIYAO EISUKE COMPANY OF YOKOHAMA MEIJI ERA, 19TH/20TH CENTURYModelled as a kneeling archer ready to shoot, his right arm drawing back the notched arrow and his left arm raised to hold forth his taut bow, wearing elaborate robes detailed in gilt, signed Miyao on the back, raised on a rectangular wood plinth, the figure 21.3cm, 30.3cm overall. (4)Cf. J Earle, Splendors of Imperial Japan: Arts of the Meiji Period from the Khalili Collection, pp.132 and 134-135, no.85, for a larger pair of samurai also by the Miyao Company of Yokohama. Under its founder Miyao Eisuke, it became one of the most prolific workshops of the Meiji era, specialising in ornamental cast-bronze sculptures mainly for the export market. The subject of warriors, such as archers and samurai, was a favourite theme, appealing to the exoticist tastes of Western collectors.

A Singing Bird Automata, 20th century, with two birds and a tree in a brass domed cage, on a drum base with clockwork movement29cm highAutomata appears to ber in working order, the mechanism winds smoothly and the birds move and sing. The feathers on both are slightly bedraggled, the tail feathers on the higher bird being particularly untidy. The faux leaves are also looking quite tired. The cage is in fairly good order with some very minor wear, discolouration etc. Next to the mechanism switch, on the underside of the base, is handwritten the word 'on' with an arrow showing direction to operate. There is also some minor surface loss to base underside, probably from sticky tape.

It fastens with a pin and revolver catch. It bears no hallmark nor stamp but in our opinion would test as gold and silver. The MoD ordered custom-built wristwatches from 12 Swiss watchmakers: Buren, Cyma, Eterna, Grana, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Lemania, Longines, IWC, Omega, Record, Timor and Vertex. Each company was given the specific brief of providing watches that were accurate, reliable and durable, with a black dial, Arabic numerals, luminous markers, a railroad minute track, shatterproof glass and a stainless-steel case. No matter the maker, these watches can be identified by the engraved 'W.W.W.' on the reverse, as well as the broad arrowhead mark on the dial, inner case, and reverse, and both military and civil serial numbers on the reverse. Case with surface scratches, case with minor dents in parts to edges, case is dirty in parts, back cover with small opening tool marks, later strap, glass with scratches, original dial finish, luminous Arabic and outer hour markers are nicely aged and have a good even patina, hands have been later painted, hands missing luminous, hand setting correctly and winding smoothly, movement in going order.
