Having seen the previous evening’s show on the 1976 Station To Station tour, Rowlands was primed to capture the image of Bowie as The Archer while the singer was preparing to fire his imaginary bow and arrow. The pose was used as a signal for Bowie's lighting engineer to kill the lights. The picture was taken moments before the lights were killed. Rowlands took the shot about 30 feet away from the stage and he credits his Hasselblad camera for producing an image that is striking in its sharp tonal range of whites, blacks and grays".

Lee Enfield SMLE MkIII .303 bolt action rifle fitted with a Periscopic Prism Company London sniper scope, the mount stamped 3007 (this is used as the rifle's serial number for licensing purposes) the rifle itself is completely devoid of any markings or serial numbers, the only marks being the Birmingham proof marks and H.V. stamped to the barrel just behind the tangent rear sight, an inspectors stamp to the butt plate tang and to the magazine follower. The scope, fitted with quick release mounts has a post and bar reticule and B&Co. broad arrow stamped leather covers. With a period leather sling.UK SECTION 1 FIREARMS LICENCE WITH .303 VARIATION OR RFD REQUIRED 113cm long The rifle is in good general outward condition with all the knocks and marks of a military rifle but a nice general patina. The bore shows signs of considerable use and the rifling is soft around the edges throughout the tube. There is more wear around the throat area. The crown is soft around the edges too and there is an old pitting patch to the top edge around 12 o'clock on the crown. The action works correctly with a positive spring. The bolt face has a lightly pitted primer pocket ring mark. The blueing to the metal finish is starting to fade to grey in areas. There is some very light speckled pitting. The stock has lots of dents, scratches and marks but no splits or repairs. The scope has some pitting to the outside of the tube. Sighting through the scope, a reasonably clear and useable picture is seen, it is however a little foggy. The elevation adjusts correctly. The sling is usable but is perishing across the surface.
