Inscription reads "For the original 'Auld Elspa' with the Author's dearest love." The inscription to the upper cover reads "Challoner". Felver's copy. The charming watercolour Valentine card loosely inserted shows Cupid standing forlorn with his bow and arrow on the ground, saying "Boo hoo! my occupation's gone. February 14th 188 one. For Elspeth Crawhall, Ambulance Certificate." 'Aunt Elspa' was a family term of endearment for Crawhall's daughter Elspeth. Refreshingly boisterous in comparison to much Victorian children's literature, this contains the usual self-caricature on p.15 with the author being chased by a termagant queen and the crow on the sheaf of wheat from the family crest.
