MOLLY M. LATHAM (c.1900-1987) "STEADY AIM", WINNER OF THE OAKS, 1946 Signed and dated 1946, oil on canvas 61.5 x 87.5cm. ++ Relined; otherwise in good condition Steady Aim, born in 1937, by Felstead out of Quick Arrow, was bred and owned by Sir Frank Butt. At odds of 7/1 she won the Oaks by three lengths from Iona in Harry Wragg's capable hands. She was injured before the St. Leger and was never to race again, but she bred five noble winners.

Whitworth-steel nitro chopperlump barrels with matt sight rib, open sights with silver inlays for 100 and 200 yards, and with ramp-mounted bead foresight with serial numbered hood protector, bolstered treble-grip action with side-clips, bolted automatic safety, arrow cocking-indicators, removable striker discs, best bouquet and scroll engraving, retaining much original colour-hardening and finish, 14 1/2in. pistolgrip stock with cheekpiece, sling swivels and engraved pistolgrip-cap, weight 9lbs. 7oz., in its brass-cornered oak and leather case. The maker's have kindly confirmed that the rifle was completed in August 1898.

Meanwhile the Gaelic inscription DIA’S MO DHUTAICH may be interpreted as God’s Own Country.
