A circa 1870's to 1880's fan, with ivory monture, the guards deeply carved with scrolling tendrils and leaves, the gorge painted in pastel green and subtle colours, depicting a garden with trellis construction, flowers, and perched and flying birds. The silk leaf is painted with an unusual scene of Cupid holding aloft a large heart, with a young lady aiming a bow and arrow with fair accomplishment, watched by her companion and another cherub, both also holding bows. The scene is bordered with Brussels needle and bobbin lace applied to net, the border mainly leaves of bobbin lace, some needle lace floral sprays to the centre in small scale designs. The verso is of cream silk, and marked to the left for ''Duvelleroy, London''. Guard length 10.5 inches or 27cm. A large late 19th century bone fan, the guards and gorge carved and pierced, the leaf of cream silk overlaid with Brussels bobbin lace, with the usual floral motifs supplemented by some which appear to be daffodils. The verso is plain. Contained in a card fan box, the lid of which is shattered. Guard length 13.5 inches or 34.5cm. A late 19th century pink mother-of-pearl fan, the monture carved and pierced, silvered and gilded. The leaf, of Brussels bobbin lace, is formed for the insertion of two gauze panels, the larger scene one of cherubs picking flowers, one presenting them to a lady, the side vignette showing another cherub, resting after his labours, being watched by two others from behind a wall. Signed indistinctly J Couson. Guard length 10.5 inches or 27 cm. T/w a cream card fan box, unlabelled. A circa 1850's mother-of-pearl fan, with double paper lithographed leaf, the monture carved and pierced, gilded and silvered. The recto shows a gentle scene of couples walking in a garden, one man being introduced to a lady by her suitor, others considering buying posies from a small girl. Three other couples relax, one reading, the other ladies clearly the object of protestations of love. A small dog scampers amongst them. The verso shows a similar scene of couples at leisure, two ladies holding open fans. Guard length 10.5 inches or 27cm. An empty cream silk covered fan box marked to the inside lid, in gold, with ''Duvelleroy, London, 167 Regent Street (5) . Fan 1, the monture is sound but the silk is splitting on several folds, recto/verso. Fan 2, the upper guard is broken down by the rivet, all sections present. The lace is in good condition albeit a little grubby. Box lid shattered. Fan 3 is in poor condition with both guards broken. The gorge sticks are generally intact but many are broken off from the bone ribs. Brown glue residue is evident on the lace where a clumsy repair has been attempted. One major split to the gauze in both vignettes. Fan 4 has one broken guard and several broken gorge sticks, with brown glue residue from previous attempts at repair. The fan box does not fit any of the fans without boxes.
