Ernest Johnson, 1936 Berlin Olympic Games bronze prize medal and diploma presented to the Great Britain cyclist Ernest Johnson designed by Professor Giuseppe Cassioli, manufactured by B M Mayer of Pforzheim, the obverse with Victory seated above a stadium holding a palm branch and inscribed XI OLYMPIADE BERLIN 1936, TEAM PURSUIT E. A. JOHNSON, the reverse with a winner carried aloft by jubilant athletes, in original presentation case; the third prize diploma and black and white photograph of the team, (3) The four man team Harry Hill, Ernest Mills, Charles King and Ernest Johnson won the bronze, Italy took silver and gold went to France. The following Lots 165 to 169 relate to the career of Ernest Johnson. Ernest Johnson was born in Putney and was a familiar figure at the Herne Hill velodrome during the thirties. He was part of the British quartet that won bronze medals in the team pursuit at both the Los Angeles and Berlin Summer Olympic Games. The performance of the British pursuiters in Berlin was unusual in that they lost all three races before the bronze medal race but progressed each time because of their finishing times were superior to other heat winners.

EWART GILK...', in glazed ornate gilt gesso frame with scrolled corners, of the period, canvas dimensions: 58 x 92 cm, frame dimensions: 84 x 117.5 x 13 cm.Provenance: Private collection of a descendent of the Palairet family. The inscribed label verso bears initials of the owner's relative, probably being - British Diplomat Sir (Charles) Michael Palairet (1882-1956) who was the grandson of Captain Septimus Henry Palairet (1807-1854, late Captain of Her Majesty's twenty ninth Regiment of Foot of Bradford, Wiltshire). Septimus Palairet was one of three brothers: John Gwalter Palairet (1797-1878) and Samuel Charles Palairet (1798-?) and one of whom may be the subject of this portrait.Giovanni Battista Canevari was a neoclassical painter who studied under Pietro Benvenuti at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. He fought in the 1813-14 Napoleonic wars then, in 1824, settled in Rome where this portrait was painted.Canevari was renowned for his miniature portraits and greatly influenced by English miniaturists. He was popular amongst English travellers and produced oil portraits influenced by Italian and Dutch masters. His pupils included Richard Buckner and Crispini.
