An Ola Gorie (20th Century) silver brooch, modelled in the form of a swooping bird, Edinburgh, 1975, 6.8g Ola M Gorie was born in Orkney in 1937 and trained at Grays School of Art in Aberdeen, leaving in 1960 as the first graduate of its jewellery department. Gorie returned to Orkney where she first retailed jewellery through jewellery shops before finally opening her own. Gorie's work drew inspiration from Orkey's Norse, Pictish, Scottish and Celtic heritage, from natural forms and from art history. Success followed quickly, and commissions for one-off pieces came from the Queen Mother, Liberty of London, the British Museum and the House of Commons. In 1999 Gorie was awarded an MBE in recognition of her services to the jewellery industry.
