Jacques Bailly dated 11th September 2023. The painting will be included in his forthcoming catalogue raisonné on Jean Dufy. The original owner of the work Iris Hughes had an important British collection of Post-Impressionist art, including Pierre Bonnard, Walter Sickert and Maurice Utrillo, and was the daughter of Sir and Lady Maximillian Michaelis, who donated a large part of their collection to the South African National Gallery. This beautiful work by Jean Dufy is the third work sold by Roseberys from this collection, following the successful sale of a Georges Rouault and Claude Venard in September 2023. The present work is a brilliant example of the artist’s joyful style that he developed in parallel with his brother, Raoul Dufy. Jean Dufy had the first exhibition of his work at the celebrated Galerie Berthe Weill, Paris, in 1914. This gallery had presented the first exhibitions of many of the most important Fauve artists, including Henri Matisse, Albert Marquet and Emilie Charmy.

WW2 First Edition , Signed Barbed Wire. Memories of Stalag 383 by M N McKibbin Illustrated by A G Dallimore Published by Staples press London 1947 First Edition and signed by the author on the title page. There are actually two signatures in this book, one is M N McKibbin (the author) and the other has not been identified (see photographs). An interesting insight to the isolated world of a WW2 German prison camp. It is a picture of Stalag 383, Hohenfels, Bavaria. It is the story of British NCO's who wouldn't work for Hitler. Both M. N. McKibbin, the author, and A. G. Dallimore, the illustrator of the book, were prisoners of Stalag 383. Their picture of life there is objective and authentic. It is a worthy record of their comrades and a warm tribute to the Red Cross. The book measures approx 18.5cm x 25cm, 128 pages, hard back, no dust jacket, the front and back covers are loose, spine board missing, the first two pages are loose but present otherwise is in good , fair condition (see photographs). This is an interesting, scare and sought after book which will cost £120 upwards if in better condition.
