Overall Size: 28 x 36 in. (- 4311)In 1960, Koether was accepted to the school of the Art Institute of Chicago at age 20. In 1963 Koether Moved to New York City and started going to the Art Students League. In June of 1966 he graduated with honors from N.Y.U. and was accepted to the N.Y.U. graduate school of Communications Arts in Cinematography under Haig Manoogian. In 1970, he moved to Paris to take a studio space at the American Center on Boulevard Raspail. In July of ’71 Koether went to Italy and did a lot of drawing and watercolors. In Florence he met Italian art restorers and learned a lot about restoration from them. That same year, he participated in a group show at the American Center and sold several pieces – one to director Henry Pillsbury. The work from Ibiza and Paris dealt with attempts to delineate abstraction as a form with his own experience of his own abstractness – landscapes and still-lives of his own psychic and emotional space. This work has a post-psychedelic aspect. In 1974 Koether moved back to New York and worked in N.Y.C. as an art restorer with Roger Ricco Associates. That year, he had a one man show at Ajanta Gallery on East 9th Street. In 1976, Koether moved to Australia and established an art conservation business and worked on the 5 major collections of Oceanic art in Australia. Charles J Lundgren (New York, Connecticut, 1911 - 1988) "U.S.S. North Carolina" Signed lower right. Original oil on Masonite painting. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover for the U.S.S. North Carolina. The first of the U.S. Navy's modern battleships, construction of the U.S.S. North Carolina began after the expiration of the Washington Treaty which placed a limit on the size of battleships. The treaty was negotiated after World War I to reduce the threat of a nation building a navy of "super dreadnoughts". She was commissioned on 9 April 1941 with Captain Olaf M. Hustvedt in command. After her commissioning, she received so much attention during her trials, she was nicknamed "Showboat." Sailing in the Caribbean, she completed her initial cruise just prior to the Pearl Harbor attack and entered the Pacific 10 June 1942. U.S.S. North Carolina spearheaded the navy's "island hopping" campaign as she participated in the landing of marines on Guadalcannal and Tulagi on 7 August 1942. Again and again in the months that followed she proved her superior fighting abilities. She used her mighty 16-inch guns to bombard enemy shore positions; her crew became a crack anti-aircraft unit -- downing between seven and fourteen enemy planes in an eight minute engagement at the Battle of the Eastern Solomons -- and she provided valuable screening support for America's aircraft carriers. She was also responsible for sinking the Japanese battleship Yamato -- the largest battleship ever built. Image Size: 13.5 x 15.75 in. Overall Size: 20.5 x 21.75 in. Unframed. (B10408)
Charles J Lundgren (New York, Connecticut, 1911 - 1988) "U.S.S. New Hampshire" Signed lower right. Original oil on Masonite painting. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover for the U.S.S. New Hampshire. Completed as the Great White Fleet circled the globe, the U.S.S. New Hampshire was commissioned on 19 March 1908 with Captain Cameron M. Winslow in command. As one of her first duties, U.S.S. New Hampshire carried a Marine Expeditionary Regiment to Colon, Panama in June, 1908. She then participated in the Naval Review by President Theodore Roosevelt in Hampton Roads 22 February 1909 welcoming home the "Great White Fleet." Through the next eighteen months, she exercised along the East Coast and in the Caribbean. She departed with the Second Battleship Division for Cherbourg, France and Weymouth, England on 1 November 1910. U.S.S. New Hampshire returned to the United States to run training missions for Naval Academy midshipmen off New England. Her training service was interrupted when she was called to patrol off strife-torn Hispaniola in December 1912. She was similarly called to protect American interests along the Mexican coast on 15 April 1914. There, she supported the occupation of Vera Cruz which helped restore stability to the tumultuous Mexican government. She was again called to quell a revolution in December, 1916 in Santo Domingo. During World War I, U.S.S. New Hampshire provided invaluable gunnery and tactical training for the American Expeditionary Forces. Image Size: 13.5 x 15.75 in. Overall Size: 20.5 x 21.75 in. Unframed. Thomson in the Historic Foreign Bonds of China book. 1913 - 5 Reorganisation Gold Loan The Reorganisation Gold Loan of 1913 was for the capital sum of 25,000,000. The Loan was, "..authorized by Presidential Order of 22nd April 1913 officially communicated by the Wai Chiao Pu to the Ministers in Peking of Great Britain, Germany, France, Russia and Japan." The newly appointed President of the Republic of China, Yuan Shih Kai, initially approached Britain, France, Germany and United States of America seeking a substantial loan to assist the fledgling government of the Republic of China. Later this group was expanded to include Japan and Russia, but eventually the United States of America withdrew from participation, leaving five countries which agreed to assist the Chinese Government with financial aid. The principal financial institutions which participated in the loan arrangements were the Hongkong & Shanghai Banking Corporation, Deutsch-Asiatiche Bank, Banque de I'Indo-Chine and Russian Asiatic Bank. The Yokohama Specie Bank participated on behalf of Japan, but did not issue separate bonds, countersigned by the bank.
