TETELA MASKThe discovery or rediscovery of this mask brings the number of known examples to eight. The other examples were itemised in Lempertz catalogue of 1 February 2023. The present mask resembles most closely the mask in the Barbier-Mueller collection, Geneva, collected by Berthe Hartert and her husband, Lodève, France, in the 1940s or 50s (Hahner-Herzog, I. and Kecskési, M., "African Masks from the Barbier-Mueller Collection", Geneva, Munich, 1998, p.91). Both masks have a whitened face, carved teeth, two carved scarification marks below each eye and the inclusion of red and blue pigments to highlight certain features.31 cm. highProvenanceJean-Pierre Jernander, Brussels

A Plea For the Free Possession, and a Renovation of the Art of Physick, first edition, initial licence leaf, old ink stamp on title, occasional foxing, contemporary calf, rebacked, a little rubbed, [Wing N397; Garrison-Morton 2529], 8vo, Printed for Richard Lownds, 1665.*** The author (1620-78, alternative spelling Marchamont Nedham) was a journalist and pamphleteer during the English Civil War. This work is an attack on the outmoded methods of the College of Physicians and includes an early account, perhaps the first by an English writer, of the germ theory, based on Athanasius Kircher's experiment (see chapter V).Provenance: James Master (ink name on licence leaf); College of Physicians (ink stamp to title).

A Rich Closet of Physical Secrets, 2 parts in 1, title within typographic border, upper edge slightly chipped (just touching border) and repaired to verso, foxed and browned, part 2 Mmm2 torn, affecting text but not legibility, upper hinge broken with front endpapers and title detached, modern burgundy morocco, gilt, slightly rubbed, [Wing M7; see Wellcome IV, p.1], 4to, Printed by Gartrude Dawson, and are to be sold by William Nealand, 1652.*** Sometimes attributed to Dr (presumably Edward) Edwards. America.- Hennepin (Louis) A New Discovery of a Vast Country in America...Between New France and New Mexico, 3 parts in 1 (second part bound after third part), first English edition, engraved frontispiece and 5 folding plates only (of 6, lacking "The Taking of Quebec by the English"), one folding engraved map only (of 2), frontispiece and title with minor marginal repair, plate of Niagara hand-coloured, map with repaired tear causing very slight loss, route hand-coloured and mileage scale browned, the occasional early ink inscription, including to verso of some plates, R6 & 2G3 tiny rust-hole within text, scattered foxing and soiling throughout, heavy browning at beginning and end, hinges repaired, 19th century calf, spine gilt but with small loss to foot, wear to extremities, joints cracked, [Wing H1450], 8vo, for M. Bentley &tc, 1698. *** The second issue of the English translation, known as the "Tonson" issue (with the first line of the imprint ending in "Tonson"), issued immediately after the first with plates and typography improved. An early account by a French missionary of his travels in the North American interior exploring the basin of the Mississippi River, and including the first printed description and engraving of Niagara Falls. In this copy the second part ("An Account of Several New Discoveries...") is bound after the third ("A Continuation..."). Provenance: "Henry H. Shufeldt Chicago 1881" (pencil inscription to front free endpaper; bookplate); indecipherable 19th century ink ownership inscription (front free endpaper); tipped-in catalogue entry captioned "Quaritch Catalog August 1896" in pencil (front free endpaper).
