A rectangular porcelain paperweight with painted armorial of Leigh of West Hall in High Legh, Co. Chester impaling Wright of Osmaston Manor, Co. Derby , 13.5cm x 8cmThe arms indicate that this was made for Egerton Leigh (1815-76) of West Hall, High Legh, DL, JP, High Sheriff etc, MP for Mid-Cheshire, who m. 1842 Lydia Rachel, daughter and co-heir of John Smith Wright of Bulcote Lodge, Notts.
An Orkney Highland oak and woven rush back arm chair with square loose trap seat and square tapering legs united by square stretchers, stamped D. M. KIRKNESS, KIRKWALL, ORKNEY followed by initials R E with thistle between, 103cm high, 65cm wide, 45cm deep David Kirkness (1855-1936) was the pioneer of Orkney straw-back chair-making. In 1956 Reynold Eunson bought the workshop and carried on the tradition. He continued to stamp the chairs with the name of Kirkness but added his own initials of R and E flanking a thistle. The V&A Museum has an example made by each maker in its collections. Facing chair front: top right attachment lacking three ties and back detached at these points, seat stringing sagging but stable, a few scratches, scuffs and wear commensurate with age and use. A little fraying to rush back but generally in good condition.

Somerset Maugham, William (1874-1965). A circa 1936 manuscript letter, letterheaded Villa Mauresque Cap Ferrat A. M, sent by Maugham to Mr. Holding, a descendent of theatrical portrait artist Samuel de Wilde (1751-1832). Letter dated April 8, reading: Dear Mr. Holding, I have been collecting de Wilde's theatrical portraits for 20 years. If you had any to sell I would gladly come to them. Yours very faithfully W. S. Maugham. Complete with handwritten envelope featuring Maugham's symbol in red to verso, and a 1935 second impression of Don Fernando, publisher's original full cloth binding, bookplate of The Book Society to ffep, 8vo. An interesting letter regarding Maugham's art collection, which was eventually bequeathed to the Holburne Museum in Bath in 2011, nearly 100 years after Maugham started collecting theatrical paintings in 1912.
