DELPECH FOR ART UNION OF LONDON, AN ENGLISH PARIAN BUST OF APOLLO THIRD QUARTER 19TH CENTURY Typically modelled on a socle base inscribed ART UNION OF LONDON 1861 PUBLISHED FEBRUARY 1 1861 and verso the bust C. DELPECH, impressed BBW & M for Bates, Brown-Westhead & Moore 36cm high Provenance: Private Collection, Fawley Manor, Berkshire Cf. A similar Art Union model of this bust sold in these rooms 14th February 2024, £320 hammer The V&A hold an example (Accession no: CIRC.178-1964) which they note is a reduction of the marble 'Apollo Belvedere' by C. Delpech, held in the British Museum. These Parian busts were produced by Copeland and commissioned by the Art Union of London, an organisation established in 1836 for the encouragement of British artists and the improvement of public taste in matters of the arts. Condition Report: Would benefit from a clean to remove general dirt and frass. No serious damage, chips or losses noted. No restoration or replacement parts noted.
