Gandhi, Mohandas Karamchand (1869-1948), a letter dated 13.2.46 from Gandhi to Agnes Phillips, handwritten by another but signed 'Love, yours, M. K. Gandhi' by Gandhi and with 'Agnes' inserted by him after 'My dear'. Contained in a typewritten envelope, the last paragraph of the letter reads: 'My doings you should follow from the papers. This is merely a line to tell you that my love does not suffer because I do not hear from you or because you are so far away from me'. Agnes Phillips, born in St Helen's in 1884, was the niece of the Reverend Charles Phillips of Johannesburg. Gandhi met her when she moved to South Africa at the beginning of the last century to look after her uncle's children. They remained in contact for the rest of Gandhi's life and he visited her regularly. Provenance: by family descent
2nd World War Family Group: War medal, 39-45 and Atlantic Star (France & Germany clasp) with Box of issue to A.G. Pearce, plus a collection of Sporting Medals, some engraved to A. Pearce. Faithfull Service medal to Joseph Henry Pearce. Civil Defence long service to Miss L M Pearce. This group with misc ephemera including I.D. cards and a watch and silver cigarette case.

A Third Reich NSKK dagger, 22cm clean flattened diamond section blade etched with the motto Alles fur Deutschland and RZM marked M.7/67/38, regulation alloy hilt with characteristic wood grip inset with a white metal eagle and enamel SA emblem, contained in its black painted steel scabbard, together with a Mauser bayonet and scabbard in worn condition. Barrington-Ward DSO Royal Engineers, an interesting selection of Trench Maps including HAZEBROUCK 5A, BELGIUM AND FRANCE SHEET 27 S.E. and SHEET 27 N.E., SHEET 28 S.W. and N.W. and SHEET 36 N.W. and to also include a series of six blue prints of the R.O.D train networks at CROQUIS for the 2nd and 5th Army Areas from August 1917.
First World War Medal Group and associated letters Lieut. M. H. Dalrymple, Scottish Borderers Medals; 1914- 1918 War medal and the Great War for Civilisation Medal, Letters: Typed and hand written letter Local Vicar recounting his interview with Corporal Smith -Green who found Lieutenant M. H. Dalrymple dead in a shell hole. The following accounts are taken from the letter; " He saw a body which turned out to be that of Lieutenant Dalrymple of the Scottish Borderers lying in a shell hole. He went up to the body and found that he had been dead for some months.".... " He told me from every appearance of the body, that Mr. Dalrymple must either have been wounded, or suffering from gas, but had been sufficiently conscious to creep into the protection afforded by the shell hole"......" there was no identification disc", ..... "I think therefore that the first account which reached you saying that your brother was killed by shells while lying wounded in a small farm- can hardly be true"...... " I pressed Corp ral Green to let me know as near as possible the spot where your brother was lying. At last he said I could describe it to anybody who came from Leeds because we call our trenches by the names of Leeds Streets". Two Copy letters From Corporal Smith -Green, the first asking Mr Dalrymple whether he would like the few items he found on his brother's body returned and that he did not write to his mother "as it may upset her" ; the 2nd accounting how he found Lieutenant M. H. Dalrymple. Together with 5 letters addressed to J Hamilton Dalrymple, and a identification tag Lt Dalrymple, (unknown whether this was sent later as in both letters it is stated that this was never found. Family link to Nina Hollings whose medal group can be found in the previous lot with those of two sons.

A late Victorian Silver Salver, of shaped circular form, with cast and applied gadrooned and foliate border, to a segmented engraved field, with floral and fruiting cartouches and vacant centre, raised on three claw and ball feet, with presentation inscription verso “Presented to Miss Jean Craps by the Employees at Shropshire House, Threeway House and Great Titchfield Street, the Factories of M Craps & Sons Ltd on the occasion of her Marriage to Mr Gerald Harris April 8th 1951”, diameter 15”, weight 45 oz
A last quarter of the 19th Century Silver cased open faced Fob Watch, L R & Co, the frosted gilt and jewelled movement, with mono metallic balance, to a gilt highlighted and silvered engraved dial, with applied Roman numerals and blued steel spade hands, in a hinged and polished case, with all over floral foliate and C scroll decoration, centred with a vacant cartouche, Birmingham 1885, Makers Mark M S, 57219 and further retailers stamp L R & Co, width 1 5/8”
A silver rose bowl, Birmingham 1965, of circular form with rope twist embossed decoration upon stepped foot, 15 cm high, together with a pair of silver bud vases, with everted rim and tapering conical body, Birmingham 1901, maker C & F, 22.5 cm high, a silver ashtray, London 1918, Francis Barker & Son Ltd, a silver tulip shaped bud vase, Birmingham 1906, maker H M, 15.5 cm high, a silver-plated sauce boat and a silver-plated six section toast rack, (7).
