WW2. A Piece of metal from John Hopgoods Lancaster M-Mother RAF Fighter plane, which was shot down in 1943, a hero. John Hoppy Hopgood, pilot and 2nd in command in the May 1943 Dambusters raid, died a hero at just 21 years old. Wounded by flak and with his Lancaster M-Mother ablaze, Hoppy had no hope of escape yet managed to gain height for two of his crew to parachute to safety. The plane crashed moments later. original condition. Obtaiined from Herr Peters who was a local farmer who witnessed the crash as boy, they collected a number of pieces of wreckage from the crash site. Good condition. Back of cover features backstamps, Bayonne 15. 9. 75, RAF Gibraltar 21 Nov 75, RAF Marham 28 Nov 75. Cover taken on the Southern Ferries M. V. Panther to San Sebastian and by courier to Bayonne. It was then carried across the border into Spain and subsequently to Gibraltar, whence it was flown on a training flight to the UK. Good condition.
