Lot 2316

A Charles II West Country Silver Trefid Spoon, Probably by Richard Hamlin, Taunton, Dated 1683 the back of the trefid terminal prick engraved with initials 'W*E' over 'W*T' and with the date '1683' between19cm long, 17dwt, 26grRichard Hamlin is recorded as an important spoonmaker who was also known to have made the church plate for both the parishes of Otterhampton and Stocklynch Ottersey (T. Kent, West Country Silver Spoons and Their Makers 1550-1750, London, 1992, p. 96-97). He would seem to have used different marks, including the distinctive RH in a shield and above two pellets and an annulet as on the present spoon (op. cit. p. 96, no. M.60).Marked on back of handle with maker's mark RH twice. There is some minor wear to the marks. There is some overall surface scratching and wear. The wear is noticeable as a minor softening to the engraving. There is some wear to the edge of the bowl on one side.

Beleuchtung durch Kohlebogenlampe in Entlüftergehäuse, am Lampenhaus Kondensor und Kuvette für destilliertes Wasser zur Kühlung des Filmlichtes, alles montiert auf Stahlsäule. - Besonderheit: 1926 entstand durch Zusammenschluss mehrerer Firmen die Zeiss Ikon AG in Dresden. Ltd, Ankerwerk mit Steinen, Nr. 85090, bimetallische Unruhe, polierte Feder, vernickeltes Messinggehäuse mit umgekehrter Aufzugskrone zum Aufziehen von unten, Emaillezifferblatt mit römischen Kapiteln, innerer Ring mit roten Buchstaben A bis M für die Stunden von 1:00 bis 12:00 Uhr und ein äußerer Ring N bis Z für 13:00 bis 24:00 Uhr, die Minuten zwischen XI und XII sind mit R, S, W und X beschriftet, gebläute Stahlzeiger, 65 mm Durchmesser der Uhr. Gut funktionierender Zustand. - Dieses Morseverfahren war im britischen Eisenbahnsystem entwickelt worden und bestand aus einer Kurzschriftmethode, mit der die Zeit schnell durch Eingabe von nicht mehr als drei Buchstaben angegeben werden konnte. In der britischen Armee wurde die Methode der Eisenbahn von der Signalabteilung der Royal Engineers übernommen und war zu der Zeit, als die neue drahtlose Telegraphie im Ersten Weltkrieg eingesetzt wurde, bereits eingeführt. In the British Army, the railway method was adopted by the Signals Department of the Royal Engineers and was in place by the time the new wireless telegraphy was used in the First World War. In the worldwide system of wireless telegraphy, the Marconi companies also used the railway's time code system, but extended the system to indicate night time as well as day time.
