A George III Silver Cream-Jug, Maker's Mark AS NS, London, 1768, pear-shaped and on pad feet, one side chased with a cow within a rural landscape, the other with a swan near a windmill, engraved with initials 'H' over 'R*M', 9cm high, 2oz 8dwt. Fully marked underneath. There is some wear to the marks, consistent with age. There is overall surface scratching and wear, consistent with age and use. The wear is noticeable as a softening to the high points. Two feet have been pushed slightly into the body and there is a repair at the top handle junction
A George III Silver Snuff-Box, by Robert Cattle and James Barber, York, 1807, oval with reeded sides, the hinged cover engraved with initial 'M'; Together With: a Victorian Silver-Mounted Mother-of-Pearl Fruit-Knife, by George Unite, Birmingham,1897, the snuff-box 8cm wide, 2oz 11dwt. (2) Robert Cattle and James Barber would seem to have entered into partnership sometime after 20 November 1807, when Cattle was submitting silver to the York Assay office on his own account and 27 December of that year when they is the first record of them submitting work together (M. Baggott, An Illustrated Guide to York Hallmarks 1776-1858 and a Transcript and Index of the York Assay Office Ledger 1805-1821, Bodmin, 2010, ledger pp.16-17). The present box is very probably that which was submitted by 'Mess Cattle & Barber' on 26 March 1808 as part of a parcel of silver weighing 297oz 9dwt (op cit., ledger p. 19, line 1).. The snuff-box: Fully marked inside the base including with York town mark. The cover part marked with maker's mark, lion passant and duty mark. There is a small amount of wear to the marks, though each is legible. There are some overall surface scratches and wear, consistent with age and use. The surface is somewhat bright. The fruit-knife: Fully marked on blade. The marks are clear. There is some pitting to the blade. The handle with silver shield later engraved with initials.
A Victorian Gilt-Metal Mounted Cut-Glass Double Scent-Bottle, by Sampson Mordan and Co., Late 19th Century, Retailed by J. M. Muirhead, Glasgow, the cut-glass body with a screw-cap at one end and a spring loaded hinged cover at the other, in fitted box, the bottle 12.5cm long. Stamped inside the spring loaded cover 'S Mordan and Co London'. There is some discolouration on the gilt metal mounts and some staining inside the glass. There are some scuffs and marks to the box.

The ring is in good condition. It is hallmarked with sponsor's mark 'SU', Chester, 1899. The approximate qualities of the diamonds are; colour I/J/K, clarity SI1/SI2/I1. Gross weight 3.1 grams. Asian languages.- Schlegel (Augustus William) Réflexions sur l'étude des langues asiatiques adressées à Sir James Mackintosh, suivies d'une lettre à M. Horace Hayman Wilson, first edition, presentation copy from the author, half-title, occasional spotting, lightly browned, contemporary wrappers, lacking backstrip, housed in a card chemise and board slip-case, 8vo, Bonn, 1832.⁂ Includes a prospectus for a plan to translate and publish relevant works on Eastern History, Science and Belles-Lettres that are still only available in manuscript in the BM, East-India House and the universities. The volume is presented to a Dr. Becker.
America.- California Gold Mining.- [Hutchings (James M.)] "Forty-Nine". Articles in a Miner's Creed, broadside printed on blue paper, double-column text within typographic border with decorative corner-pieces, slightly faded at foot and with pin-holes and slight tears to corners, with conjugate blank leaf, 4to (250 x 195mm.), ? San Francisco, 1855.⁂ Rare, Worldcat locates a copy at Yale only; only 2 recent auction records, one on blue paper like this, the other on white. Apparently 2 issues are known; this one has last word of text in column 1 "isn't" not "snt" and has copyright notice at foot ending with "California." Hutchings made a fortune as a miner, lost it all and then re-made it in publishing. He was one of the early settlers in Yosemite Valley and did much to promote the area which became an National Park in 1864.
