LIVINGSTONE & STANLEY: LIVINGSTONE DAVID (1813-1873) Scottish Missionary and Explorer & STANLEY HENRY M. (1841-1904) British Explorer & Journalist. Individual dark ink signatures of David Livingstone ('David Livingstone'; on a small blue piece with two additional words in his hand, evidently clipped from the conclusion of a letter) and Henry M. Stanley ('Henry M Stanley'; on a white card, also signed in dark ink by his wife, the painter Dorothy Stanley 1855-1926). Matted in cream with gold coloured borders alongside each other and beneath three reproduction images including portraits of the two men. Framed and glazed in a gold coloured frame to an overall size of 16.5 x 19.5. A couple of light stains and one minor scuff, only very slightly affecting the signatures, otherwise VG
SPRINGS ELLIOT WHITE: (1896-1959) American Fighter Ace of World War I, ranking joint sixth highest in the country with 16 air combat victories. Book signed, a hardback edition of Above The Bright Blue Sky, First Edition published by Doubleday, Doran & Company, Inc. 1928. Signed ('Elliot White Springs') in bold black fountain pen ink with his name alone, beneath printed text, which states, 'This edition, bound in the famous Fort Mill sheeting is limited to one hundred and fifty copies. This copy is number 14 and is presented to you with compliments but you do not have to read it. If you do read it, you do not have to like it. If you do like it, you do not have to tell me about it. If you do tell me about it, you do not have to offer me a drink. Alcohol and flattery both go to my head.' Bound in green cloth. No dustjacket. With light age wear and dust staining to the spine. Together with a T.L.S, Elliot Springs, using a purple rubber stamp signature, one page, 4to, Lancaster, South Carolina, 17th October 1956, to Captain Neil M. Goen, on the printed stationery of the Lancaster and Chester Railway Company. Springs replies to his correspondent's enquiry as to the addresses of former military comrades, comprising Mort Newhall, L.K. Callahan, Bennett Oliver, Lt. Brown, Adjutant, and Major General Bissell. Accompanied by the original envelope. Also including three photographs, unsigned, of Springs, two with comrades of World War I, c.1918, and a third of Springs seated, at the wheel of a car, 1917. Each annotated to the verso, and being part of the collection of his wife Frances Hubbard Ley. G-VG, 5
HITLER'S CHANCELLERY: A small selection of A.Ls.S.,a postcard, carbon copies etc., removed from the Reich Chancellery, including, eleven carbon copies of letters, unsigned, by various District Leaders and local dignitaries, sent between January and March 1938, to Friedrich Billert, in German. The correspondence concerning a commemorative book about Mussolini's 1937 visit to Germany; an A.L.S., with the initial M, one page, large 8vo, n.p., n.d., to an unknown correspondent. The letter announces an exhibition for the book 'Ways', stating in part, 'Here one finds clear and healthy lyrics and strong versification, poetical words, which raise 'Ways' high above the everyday literature…'; three A.Ls.S., Lene, six pages, 4to, Munich and Berlin (2), September 1928 - October 1940, to Theodore, in German. Lene complains to her correspondent about lack of money, and another letter enquires how the treatment is going for a broken foot and further asking about shoes for the children, finally informing of life in Berlin, commenting on the allied bombing, an exhibition by the WHW, and leisure time, in part, 'When we were once more alone, we ate in a festive mood, and had rolls and sausage, and sweet mustard and real tea. I tasted wonderful to us.' With tears, creases, and age wear; an A.L.S., Frau Endres, two pages, 8vo, Krefeld, 7th January 1945, to Herr Bormann, in German. An intriguing letter regarding the supply of a battery, stating, in part, 'Please do not take this enquiry and request amiss, but it is difficult for us two old imbeciles to live without radio and German broadcasts in these great and eventful times… In the sure hope that you, dear Herr Bormann will be able to provide the happiness of Father Heimendahl and myself… if possible, please, quickly as Father Heimendahl has his 80th Birthday on 6th February.', etc. Most with translations. FR (2), G to VG, 24Provenance: The items being sold in this lot were removed from Hitler's Chancellery, Berlin, in July 1945, primarily from the offices of his adjutants, and subsequently sold by Charles Hamilton Auctions, New York, in June 1983.
[HITLER ADOLF]: (1889-1945) Fuhrer of the Third Reich 1933-45. VON BISMARCK OTTO CHRISTIAN ARCHIBALD (1897-1975) Prince of Bismarck. German Politician & Diplomat. T.L.S., Bismarck, one page, 4to, London, 2nd April 1935, to Miss [Eileen] Cond, on the Prince's personal printed stationery from the German Embassy. Bismarck thanks his correspondent for her kind letter and explains 'Unfortunately it will not be possible to get you a signature of Herr Hitler, as he declines giving his signature to anybody'. In a holograph conclusion the Prince invites Cond to come and see him at the Embassy if she comes to London. Together with a T.L.S. by a member of Hitler's staff at his Chancellery, one page, small 4to, Berlin, 24th March 1934, to Herr Cond, in German. The official writes on behalf of the Fuhrer and states, in part, 'I am sorry to inform you that the exceedingly great demand & the great number of similar requests makes it impossible to fulfil your wishes for a personal signature'. Also including a series of T.Ls.S. etc., by various secretaries and officials on behalf of other famous individuals, most political leaders and members of Royal families, the majority written to Eileen Cond in the 1930s and politely declining her requests for signatures, including representatives of Benito Mussolini (in part, 'I regret to inform you that the Head of the Italian Government, following a practice he has adopted and from which he does not feel he can depart, is very sorry to be unable to comply with your request of granting you his autograph'), King Edward VIII (accompanied by a portion of the original registered envelope featuring the typed address panel bearing a square ERI VIII rubber stamp to the lower left corner), King Leopold III of Belgium, Prince Arthur of Connaught, Queen Victoria Eugenie, Tsar Ferdinand I of Bulgaria, Italo Balbo, Maurice Ravel, J. M. Barrie etc. Some light overall age wear and a few letters with paperclip rust stains to the edges. Generally G, 33
FASCIST ITALY: Selection of signed pieces, T.Ls.S., A.Ls.S., a few telegrams, postcards etc. by various individuals in relation to Italian political, military, and civil organisations to various correspondents, all in Italian. The selection including a telegram, 15th September 1938, addressed to all Ministers and others, drafted in highly legalistic terms, and dealing with the withdrawal of exemption from mobilisation from certain categories which had previously been granted it; a telegram, handwritten, 19th December 1934, from the Supreme Defence Commission stating that Mussolini orders that drivers of cars belonging to governmental authorities are not to use horns within the Rome city area; a typed letter, signed by Renzo Garrone, to the President of the Council of Ministers asking for clarification of the date of the next meeting, with a holograph notation, 'postponed to a day to be fixed in July', initialled 'M' by Mussolini; a typed letter, signed by Renzo Garrone, 5th November 1923, from the Supreme Defence Commission, to the Minister of Colonies, Rome; a typed letter, 1st March 1925, from the Chief of Cabinet, Ministry of Public Works, Rome, to the President of Council Ministers; a letter, signed by General Angiolini, accompanied by the envelope and his calling card; a postcard, 26th July 1924, from an unidentified correspondent; a typed letter, 6th January 1942, from the Italian Air Attaché, Bucharest, to General Speidel, written in German, the correspondent congratulates Speidel on his promotion to Air General; a plain postcard, signed by General Francesco Zocconi, 12th December 1965, to Rolando Sensini, regarding the autograph of Pope John XXIII, of which Zocconi is unable to supply; a letter, signed by Albino Pagliano (Hotel Proprietor), to an Argentinian correspondent; a visiting card signed by General Sorabanch, 23rd July 1944; two postcards to Roland Sensini, one being signed by General Luigi Trigone; a typed letter, signed by General Adriano Oliva, 2nd April 1962; a postcard signed by an unidentified Minister of Naval Defence; a typed letter, signed by Ferruccio Palazzi, Director at the School of Ceramics, giving his view on the national need to start a Centre of Ceramics; a letter, signed by Cardinal Vincenzo Vannutelli, 3rd December 1928 etc. Some of the letters have file holes to the left edge, a few with pencil annotations, and light age wear, generally G to VG, 21
[SUMPTER LEONARD]: (1911-1993) British Royal Air Force Flight Sergeant, a member of 617 Squadron who participated in Operation Chastise (The Dambusters Raid) as Bomb aimer of Lancaster ED929/G AJ-L, 16th-17th May 1943. A unique personal hardback 4to scrapbook, complied by Sumpter during his service with 617 Squadron, 1943-45, with a postcard photograph adhered to the cover, the image depicting a Lancaster in flight high above the English countryside, beneath a partially torn label stating '…J Sumpter. Navigator…'. The scrapbook containing 53 pages of various newspaper cuttings, original photographs, and a telegram, and numerous annotations in Sumpter's hand, including, 'R.A.F. Left huge fires raging in Berlin' (newspaper cutting, 18th January 1943, annotated 'This is a report on flight made with F/L Curry (Pilot), P/O Henderson (Nav), F/S Sumpter (Bomb Aimer), F/S Higgins (M/V), F/S Shepherd (W/OP), Sgt. Henderson (F/E), F/O Longden'); 'Ruhr Floods Arms Cities From Mined Dams' (newspaper cutting, 16th May 1943); a photograph of the Mohne Dam, above which Sumpter has written, 'Nets on Mohne Dam erected after repair to Dam. Taken April 47 by self'; a newspaper cutting entitled 'Dam raiders meet King', the final sentence of the article stating, in part, 'Their Majesties spoke to every Officer and N.C.O. in the squadron…', next to which Sumpter has written, 'This is a lie!'; a typed telegram to Sumpter, signed by Air Chief Marshal Arthur Harris, 23rd May 1943, the message stating, 'My warmest congratulations on the award of your Distinguished Flying Medal'; a newspaper cutting depicting bomb damage headlined, 'Bomb-Aimers view of RAF Target' (annotated 'February 8th '44' and 'Limoges'); newspaper cutting, 'First picture of our 5½-Ton bombs' havoc', with further newspaper photographs of the Limoges raid annotated 'Before' and 'After', and with two original photographs annotated 'Marker Bombs exploding on roof at Limoges (raid) factory' and 'Limoges. Taken during raid. By Flashbomb'; a newspaper cutting 'RAF pin-point 'Busters'on tyres centre', beneath, an original photograph depicts a bomb on its carriage, surrounded by ground staff, annotated, 'The 12,000lb bomb for blast effect. First used Sept. 1943'; a reprinted photograph, captioned by Sumpter, 'Michelin Tyre Works Clermont-Ferrand'; '1,500 tons smashed this tank depot' (newspaper cutting 3rd April 1944); a typed telegram to Sumpter, signed by Air Marshal Robert Saundby, 24th May 1944, the message stating, 'My warmest congratulations on the award of your Distinguished Flying Cross' opposite a newspaper cutting depicting Sumpter in head and shoulders pose, above the headline, 'D.F.C. for Kettering Dam Buster'; 'Fleet of Nazi Ships Sunk at Le Havre' (newspaper cutting 13th June 1944); an original aerial photograph of a bomb dropping high over Northern France, to which Sumpter has added, '13,400lb Bomb. Penetration type. Submarine pen 'Buster'. Picture taken over Northern France, 24.6.44. Just after the release of a 13,400lb bomb. This type was first used in May 1944. Main use is for destroying underground works'; an original photograph of servicemen and women at a dance, clearly showing Sumpter dancing with a woman from the W.A.A.F., annotated, 'Squadron party July 18th 1944. Partnered by Diana Mitchell-Dawson (Cpl)'; three original aerial photographs, one depicting the submarine base at La Rochelle, France (26th December 1941), and two others depicting the midget U-boat shelters at Pooters Haven, Holland, annotated '617 Squadron alone - Tallboy bombs, 3.2.45'; an original photograph of the Bielefeld Viaduct, above which Sumpter has written, 'Bielefeld Viaduct. Photographed by myself May 1947, showing temporary repair 2½ years after raid'; an original aerial photograph annotated '22.2.45 Railway viaduct Bielefeld Germany (nr. Hanover), This was destroyed. Nine spans were demolished', Sumpter indicating with ink the viaduct on the photograph; an original aerial photograph of the submarine pens at Farge, Germany, annotated '27.3.45 617 Squadron alone. "Grand Slam" bombs', with three press cuttings of the raid, Sumpter also indicating in ink the targets on the photograph; a reprinted photograph, a detailed image of the damaged inflicted at Farge, photographed from within the submarine pen, annotated, 'Taken late 1945. Farge'; an original aerial photograph of Ijmuiden harbour, annotated, 'Ijmuiden. 7.4.45. Ship attacked is by jetty in lower left of the picture. Tonnage 14,000'; a reprinted photograph of a Lancaster bomber releasing a 22,000lb bomb, annotated, '22,000lb bomb on release. Note straps hanging. Bomb doors were removed for this bomb, also mid upper turret. Taken over the target. Only 5 crew carried, P-B/A-Eng-Rear Gunner-Nav'; newspaper headline 'Berchtesgaden hit by 12,000lb bombs', with a further press cutting (26th April 1945); a reprinted photograph depicting aircraft flying at high altitude, annotated, 'Armada on the way to Berchtesgaden 25.4.45'; a magazine photograph of Hitler's Berghof at Berchtesgaden, above which Sumpter has indicated the location of the Eagles Nest; a photograph (possible reprint) of the destruction of the Mohne Dam taken at ground level, written on the page below Sumpter reveals, 'Bought for 1 cigarette from a German on Mohne Dam. June 21st 1947'; a newspaper photograph depicting R.A.F. Bomb Disposal personnel examining three 'bouncing bombs' at Reculver, Kent (1980); a single page, being a hand written performance chart of Sumpter's navigational skills, with error rates stated for various tasks, including the comment, 'Sight analysis to date. Star sights taken on ground but wrong star used', written in Sumpter's hand, and signed by the course instructor, C.A. Johnson, dated 13th February 1942. With several pages neatly removed, the spine slightly loose, but with all pages firmly intact, and with age wear to the cover, otherwise GSumpter had already served two stints in the Grenadier Guards before transferring to the RAF in 1941. After training in England and Canada, he was posted to 57 Squadron at Scampton in September 1942. This book was evidently used during part of the initial training and this may account for the missing pages and the one remaining page from his time under instruction.

Signed by David Shannon (1922-1993, Australian Flight Lieutenant, Pilot of Lancaster ED929/G AJ-L), in bold black ink to a clear area at the base of the image, and further signed by Tony Burcher (1922-1995, Australian Pilot Officer, Rear Gunner of Lancaster ED925/G AJ-M), in black ink to a clear area at the base of the image. Framed and glazed in a gold coloured wooden frame to an overall size of 18½ x 25½. VGProvenance: Accompanied by a statement of provenance signed by Leonard Sumpter’s daughter attesting to the fact that the items included in the present lot were the personal property of her father.
DAMBUSTERS THE: A signed colour 26 x 16 print entitled 'Cooler' Intruder AJ-G by artist Andrew S. Robertson, the image depicting the Avro Lancaster AJ-G being flown at low level toward the Mohne Dam as part of Operation Chastise. Signed by various R.A.F. and military servicemen including Len Sumpter, Bill Reid VC, Ross M. Stanford, Sydney Grimes, Dave Roger, etc., in pencil and ink pen (2), to clear areas beneath the image, further signed by the artist Andrew S. Robertson. Limited Edition numbered 17/300. Together with a signed colour 17½ x 12 print entitled Spitfire by artist J. Bachelor, the image depicting Spitfire K5054 on its first flight, 5th March 1936. Signed by Spitfire Test Pilot Jeffrey Quill in bold blue ink to a clear area on the fuselage of the aircraft. Accompanied by the original mailing tube addressed to Sumpter. With minor foxing to the Spitfire picture. G to VG, 2Provenance: Accompanied by a statement of provenance signed by Leonard Sumpter’s daughter attesting to the fact that the items included in the present lot were the personal property of her father.
WELLINGTON DUKE OF: (1769-1852) Anglo-Irish Field Marshal, the Victor of Waterloo, 1815. British Prime Minister 1828-30, 1834. A.L.S., The Duke of Wellington, in the third person, two pages, 8vo, London, 17th January 1830, to Mr. Starling. Wellington acknowledges receipt of his correspondent's letter and continues 'The Duke begs leave to decline to give Permission that Mr. Starling's work should be dedicated to him. The Duke desires to judge for himself what it is most convenient to him to do so upon such subjects, and he is much concerned if the course which he thinks proper to adopt in a case in which he must have an option does not suit the convenience of any gentleman'. With blank integral leaf. A neat, long split to the vertical central fold, not affecting the text or signature, otherwise VG Wellington's correspondent may have been the engraver and artist M. J. Starling.
GANDHI MAHATMA: (1869-1948) Indian Political and Spiritual Leader during the Indian Independence Movement. An exceptional and rare vintage signed 10 x 8 photograph by Gandhi, the original Associated Press of London photograph depicting the Indian leader standing in a three quarter length pose, dressed in his familiar traditional Indian dhoti and woven shawl. Standing alongside is Madan Mohan Malaviya, who is also seen in a three quarter length pose wearing traditional Indian clothes. Signed ('M K Gandhi') in bold blue fountain pen ink by Gandhi with his name alone to a clear area of the image. Annotated and dated London, September 1931, in an unidentified hand to the verso. Signed photographs of Gandhi are particularly rare and desirable and this is a fine example. A few very slight, extremely minor surface and corner creases, otherwise VG Mahatma Gandhi and Madan Mohan Malaviya were two of the three delegates of the Indian National Congress who attended the Second Round Table Conference in London from September to December 1931, when the present image was taken (and also most likely signed). The Gandhi-Irwin Pact had been signed earlier in the year and the discussions at the Conference led to the passing of the Government of India Act of 1935. Madan Mohan Malaviya (1861-1946) Indian Educationist, notable for his role in the Indian Independence Movement. President of the Indian National Congress 1909-10 & 1918.
