[TENNYSON ALFRED]: (1809-1892) English Poet Laureate 1850-92. TENNYSON MATILDA (1816-1913) Younger sister of Alfred Tennyson. A poignant A.L.S., M Tennyson, four pages, 8vo, Park House, Maidstone, n.d. ('29th', October 1892), to Bessie (?), on black bordered mourning stationery. It is strange to think that we have laid his noble form in his last resting place on earth. He had finished his work which God had given him to do….It is a comfort and a joy to think that he has done so much good to the world. The music set to his words Crossing the Bar which I heard in Westminster Abbey disappointed me….', adding that only a Beethoven or Mozart could have done it justice in her opinion and also remarking that Hallam has informed her that poor Emily is bearing up wonderfully. Together with a second A.L.S., Matilda Tennyson, four pages, 8vo, Farringford, 21st July n.y., to Mrs. Charles. TWEED WILLIAM M. 'BOSS': (1823-1878) American Politician, a member of the New York State Senate and head of the Tweed Ring who stole millions of dollars from the city's tax payers through political corruption. D.S., W M Tweed, one page, 4to, New York, April 1866. Charlock, Superintendent of Lamps & Gas, certifying the work and expenditure. Also signed at the foot by Peter Hoey acknowledging receipt of his payment on 20th April 1866. One file hole to the upper left corner and a few small, minor neat tears at the edges of some folds, otherwise VG Tweed's methods of corruption included instructions to New York City's contractors to vastly multiply the amounts of their bills and, once the account was approved, a go-between would cash the cheque, settle the original invoice, and divide the remainder between Tweed and other members of his ring.
