An unusual 19th century Italian steel sewing set, most pieces stamped "G.T.", made for Mariuccia Russo, contained in a tooled leather book form case fitted with three pairs of steel scissors, each pair with an heraldic shield and scroll pierced loops, two pairs with the name Maria Russo etched to the inner faces of the blades, one pair with "M. Russo" pierced within the design, 13cm, 13.5cm and 19cm, two folding knives, each pierced with heraldic shield and leaf scrolls, one with a single blade, the other three blades, 8.5cm and 9cm, three crochet hooks, each with heraldic shield and initialled "M.R.", a matching stiletto, 11.5cm, and a plain steel cylinder needlecase, 7.5cm, thimble lacking. The book form case titled to the spine "Souvenir A Mariuccia Russo" and further initialled "M.R.", the floral tooled boards with musical spandrels, the box opening both ways, to the reverse revealing a paper lined interior with two glazed frames and a set of four lidded compartments, case 27.2cm x 20.5cm. * Please note several pieces in this set are damaged and a detailed condition report is available on request. It is likely that Mariuccia Russo was a 19th century opera singer. Compare this set with a scissor and knife set presented to the tenor, Francesco Tamango (1850-1904) by fans in Palermo after a performance of Un ballo in Maschera, illustrated in scissors by Massimiliano Mandel, Page 53, plate 79.
A small Palais Royal style rectangular sewing box, in stained burr ash, the canted lid decorated with borders of cut steel pins with a rectangular central mother of pearl inset initialled "A M H B", the interior with mirror to lid, the flush fitted green velvet lined interior lacking tools, 13cm x 8.5cm.
Two mid-Victorian rectangular sewing boxes, comprising; a burr walnut dome top example with mother of pearl and abalone shell geometric escutcheon and lid panel, the latter engraved "M. Agar, Dec 23rd, 1875", the interior with quilted blue silk lid panel over an open centre compartmentalised and lidded tray, 29.5cm x 22.5cm x 13.5cm, the other in walnut with geometric inlaid bands, the interior with ruched blue silk lid panel over a compartmentalised and lidded tray, with conforming silk lids and fittings, 29.5cm x 21cm x 13.5cm.
