Kings of Mercia, Coenwulf (796-821), Penny, London, Gp I, Ludoman, coenv.vlf rex around uncial m, rev. lvd am an in arms of tribach device, 1.31g/10h (Naismith L13; BLS 20; N 342; S 914). Annealed and straightened, otherwise good fine with a slightly ragged edge £600-£800 --- Provenance: Found near Buriton, Hampshire, 2018 (EMC 2019.0207) Naismith records two Tribach pennies of the moneyer Ludoman (L13a-b). Subsequently, two additional specimens have been recorded: one each on the EMC (2014.0344) and PAS (SUR-626A04) respectively. The current specimen is unusual in the rendering of the moneyer’s name as lvdaman as opposed to the lvdoman appearing on the other recorded specimens.
Kings of Mercia, Coenwulf (796-821), Penny, Ipswich, Wodel, convvlf rex m, draped and diademed bust right breaking inner circle, rev. po d e l in angles of beaded cross with annulet terminals and centre, 1.24g/6h (Naismith 13.1f = SCBI BM 207, same dies; BLS 111; N 369; S 920). Hairline edge splits at 5 and 9 o’clock, both terminating within the legend, otherwise better than very fine, dark find patina £1,500-£1,800
