Dakyns | October 1904', rough-trimmed, original blue cloth gilt, rubbed, spine slightly darkened and damp-wrinkled, a little frayed at head, large 8voQTY: (1)NOTE:Arthur Lindsay Dakyns (1883–1941), barrister and occasional writer on political and economic affairs. Dakyns was befriended by Bertrand Russell when he was an Oxford undergraduate and Russell once described Dakyns to Gilbert Murray as 'a disciple' (16 May 1905, Bertrand Russell Archives Catalogue Entry and Research System 79178) and wrote of him to Lucy Donnelly as 'the only person up here (except the Murrays) that I feel as a real friend' (1 January 1906; Autobiography 1:181). Russell had become acquainted with the H. Graham Dakyns family in 1896 and he corresponded with both father and son. Dakyns also become friendly with John Maynard Keynes, Virginia Woolf and E. M. Forster. Dakyns seems to have tentatively added the word 'not?' in pencil into a printed line and the margin of a passage concerning the problem of whether the class of all classes is a class on p. 106.

His Highness The Maharajah Duleep Singh, from a Painting by Winterhalter in the possession of Her Majesty..., published by John Mitchell, Royal Library, printed by M & N Hanhart, 1854, chromolithograph finished by hand, trimmed to image and tipped onto a gilt titled backboard (as published), image size 535 x 295 mm, mounted, framed and glazedQTY: (1)NOTE:A fine full-length portrait of Victor Albert Jay Duleep Singh. Duleep Singh is remembered for surrendering the Koh-i Noor diamond to Queen Victoria as part of the treaty and settlement following the end of the Second Anglo-Sikh War. He was forced to abdicate his sovereignty as Maharaja of Lahore and he came to England in 1854. He became a close friend of the royal family, visiting Queen Victoria at Osborne House and inviting the Prince of Wales to shoot at his estate at Elveden Hall in Suffolk. This close relationship with the Queen is reinforced in the lithograph by the presence of her miniature, which is worn by the Maharaja on a string of pearls around his neck.
