Die von Merian nach dem Basler Totentanz gestochene Kupferfolge erschien erstmals 1621 in Basel. Für die einzige von ihm selbst verlegte Ausgabe (Frankfurt 1649) fügte er das schöne Memento mori eines unbekannten Künstlers und das berühmt gewordene Vexierbild hinzu, das einen bärtigen Edelmann mit Junkerkappe und Federbusch zeigt, welcher umgedreht betrachtet den grausamen Tod mit gefletschten Zähnen darstellt. Außerdem ergänzte er die Totentanzkupfer um eine enge Himmelsschraffur und weitere Details bei Personen und Staffage. With 43 engraved plates. First Basel edition in German and French. The impressive copper engravings of the Dance of Death by J. A. Chovin after M. Merian. The copper series engraved by Merian after the Basel Dance of Death was first published in Basel in 1621. For the only edition published by himself (Frankfurt 1649), he added the beautiful memento mori by an unknown artist and the famous conundrum showing a bearded nobleman with a squire's cap and a plume of feathers, who, viewed upside down, represents cruel death with bared teeth. He also added a close hatching of the sky and further details to the persons and staffage.
