A rare opaque twist mead or champagne glass, circa 1760-70The distinctive cup shaped bowl moulded with a ring of twenty evenly spaced basal flutes or gadroons, the double-series stem with a central gauze column encircled by two pairs of heavy opaque white spiral threads, over a folded conical foot, 15.7cm highFootnotes:ProvenanceHarvey's Wine Museum, Bonhams, 1 October 2003, lot 202Bayreuth CollectionLiteratureL M Bickerton, Eighteenth Century English Drinking Glasses (1986), p.219, no.656Glasses with this distinctive bowl are very rarely seen with opaque twist stems. Whilst traditionally known as mead glasses, mead was rarely drunk in Britain and it is more likely these were inspired by Continental roemers used for Rhenish wine, see Dwight Lanmon, The Golden Age of English Glass (2011), p.93. The London glass seller Thomas Betts sold '12 Green 1/2 Mo Egg Champagne' glasses which could refer to related forms. An important Bow figure group of 'Ki Mao Sao', circa 1750-52By the 'Muses Modeller' and left in the white, the Laotian goddess seated cross-legged with arms outstretched to display the wide sleeves of her robe, flanked by her two kneeling attendants, the elaborate scrolled base, heavily undercut, pierced and applied with groups of flowers and leaves, 17.5cm highFootnotes:ProvenanceElizabeth Adams CollectionTaken from a design by Watteau engraved by M Aubert, circa 1731. See Aubrey J Toppin, 'The Origin of Some Ceramic Designs', ECC Trans, Vol.10, Pt.2 (1977), pl.CIIa. Illustrated by Peter Bradshaw, Bow Porcelain Figures (1992), p.68, fig.19 and listed on p.89, with a polychrome version shown in fig.20. Coloured versions are illustrated by Yvonne Hackenbroch, Catalogue of the Irwin Untermyer Collection (1957), pl.80, fig.243, by Anton Gabszewicz, Bow Porcelain (1982), p.127, no.195 and others are in the collections of Colonial Williamsburg and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Examples left in the white appear to be far rarer, although a white example was analysed by William R H and Elizabeth G Ramsay, 'A Classification of Bow Porcelain from First Patent to Closure 1743-1774', Proceedings and Transactions of the Royal Society of Victoria, Vol.119, No.1 (2007).It is interesting to compare the construction of this group with that of the Chinese Lovers, see lot 406 in this sale. Both show that the individual figures have been separately made together with their own portion of the base. The joins are clearly visible on the underside in both cases but are invisible on the upper surface. With the present lot, just as much effort has been expended on the modelling and finishing of the reverse as has been on the front. This lot represents an extraordinary piece of English chinoiserie, the modelling all the more crisp and striking for being one the few left in the white. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

This remarkable guglet is among the largest pieces of opaque white glass made in this tradition and truly exemplifies this technical achievement. The various artists responsible for enamelling glass such as this were undoubtedly connected with enamelling on Staffordshire saltglaze stoneware and on Worcester porcelain, as discussed by R J Charleston in Delomosne and Sons exhibition catalogue, Gilding the Lily (1978), p.8. No other guglet of this particular form would appear to be recorded, but an example of different form was exhibited by Delomosne and Son, Gilding the Lily (1978), p.17, no.23.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 211

A fine Dutch stipple-engraved light baluster wine glass attributed to 'Gyrinius', circa 1765-75The round funnel bowl finely decorated with a stone-arched wine cellar with its wooden doors wide open, within which a cherub seated amongst barrels, drawing wine from a cask into a bottle, a nude winged cherub holding a half-filled long-stemmed wine glass in his outstretched right hand before a finely dressed lady standing before him, she reaching for the glass with her right hand, a banner above inscribed 'HANSIE IN DE KELDER' (Little Hans in the Cellar), the stem with an angular shoulder knop above a further knop and beaded inverted baluster terminating in a basal knop, over a conical foot, 17.9cm highFootnotes:ProvenanceChristie's Amsterdam, 2 May 2006, lot 186Property of a Gentleman'Hansje' goblets were used at gatherings of relatives and friends to discreetly announce that one of the ladies present, presumably the hostess, was pregnant. Whilst the present lot is unrecorded by F G A M Smit in his catalogue, Uniquely Dutch Eighteenth-Century Stipple-Engravings on Glass (1993), he does record four glasses stippled with very similar scenes and identical inscriptions all by the same hand, see pp.129-30, nos.Dd.22 to Dd.25. Smit does not attribute these to a specific engraver, but the way in which the hair and wings of the cherub and the hair and sleeves of the lady have been delineated in fine diamond-point suggests that the engraving is attributable to 'Gyrinius'.Whilst he never signed any of his engravings, 'Gyrinus' is associated with designs on 24 extant goblets known as 'polder glasses', originally commissioned by members of the Water Board office 'De Hooge Maasdijk van Stad en Lande van Heusden' between 1762 and 1788, which were sold by Christie's as part of the Earl of Bradford Collection on 4 June 1985. These particular glasses are all partly, and a few wholly, line-engraved in very fine diamond-point. With a handful of exceptions, the engraved decoration is distinctive in the use of 'pseudo-stippling' in which the decoration is formed of a pattern of fine and dense lines which give the impression of stippling. The engraving on the present lot bears particularly close similarities to a group of goblets all of very similar form which are inscribed 'INCLINATIE' on a banner, attributed by Smit (1993) to this elusive engraver on the grounds that their fine stippling incorporates some line work, see p.148, nos.Eb.29 to Eb.31. One of these is illustrated by Sheppard and Smith, Engraved Glass Masterpieces from Holland (1990), pp.68-9, no.33, who attribute it to an unknown contemporary of David Wolff. The stylistic similarities in the rendering of the grassy sward and banner between this and the present lot are particularly apparent. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
