T.L.S., Blanche Patch, by Shaw's secretary, one page, oblong 8vo, Whitehall Court, London, 7th September 1934, to Julius Klein. Patch writes on behalf of Shaw, stating, in part, 'Mr. Bernard Shaw asks me to say that he never met Casement and knew nothing about him that is not common property. He knew his cousin Mrs. Parry; and through her he strongly urged Casement not to make a lawyer's defence, which would inevitably hang him. Mr. Shaw drew up a plan for his procedure in court. But the lawyers over ruled it, and he was hanged….' Accompanied by the original envelope. Together with Rufus Isaacs (1860-1935) 1st Marquess of Reading. English Lawyer & Politician. Presided at the trial of Casement. T.L.S., Reading, one page, 8vo, Walmer Castle, Kent, 25th September 1934, to Julius Klein. Reading apologises for the delay in replying to his correspondent's letter and states 'As I was the presiding judge at the trial of Casement I cannot express opinion upon it or him.' Also including Alexander M. Sullivan (1871-1959) Serjeant-at-Law. Irish Lawyer, led the counsel for the defence in Casement's treason trial. Vintage signed 5 x 6.5 bookweight photograph of Sullivan seated in a three quarter length pose wearing his robes. Signed in blue ink, in later years, with his name alone, largely across a clear area at the base of the image. Neatly mounted. Further including Michael Doyle (1876-1960) American Lawyer, a member of the defending counsel at the trial of Casement. Vintage signed 4 x 5 bookweight photograph of Doyle in a head and shoulders pose. Signed with his name alone in blue ink, across a darker area of the image, although with reasonable contrast. Gandhi writes 'I am so glad that you were able to accompany Frida Laski to the presentation. She is a fine human being and a good friend of India and our family. We wish her well.' Signed Free Front envelope panel, addressed to Christopher Claxton at Abbots Leigh, Bristol, and dated London, 1st October 1833. Signed ('T. M. Hardy') in the lower left corner and countersigned by Maurice Berkeley (1788-1867) 1st Baron FitzHardinge. British Admiral, First and Principal Naval Aide-de-Camp to Queen Victoria. Very slightly irregularly trimmed and neatly laid down, G Captain Christopher Claxton - Royal Navy officer and a Bristol Dockyard official who became a lifelong friend and adviser to engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
MOUNTBATTEN LOUIS: (1900-1979) British Admiral of World War II. A.L.S., Mountbatten of Burma, two pages, 8vo, Romsey, Hampshire, 2nd October 1971, to 'My dear Mollie'. [Molly Travis, archivist at Broadlands]. Mountbatten begins with an apology for having upset his correspondent over the filing of his archives, remarking when you objected to my proposals for naming & numbering the Family Letter Files I knew you must have a very sound reason. The trouble was that I could not at first understand either your reason or in fact what your proposal was. The moment I understood I immediately accepted what you wanted as by far the best solution. I only wish I could have understood much earlier & so spared your feelings.' Together with two typed memorandums signed by Mountbatten, both with his initials M of B, each two pages, 8vo, 17th & 21st September 1971, the first outlining his policy for naming and locating filing cabinets, to which his archivist evidently disagreed, and the second (headed Apologia) detailing a new, simpler system of filing, again evidently along the lines of the archivist's suggestion. Also included are three 8vo pages of pencil notes in the hand of Mountbatten, being a rough draft of his original proposals. VG, 6
STANLEY HENRY M.: (1841-1904) British Explorer & Journalist. A.L.S., Henry M. Stanley, one page, 8vo, Richmond Terrace, Whitehall, 26th November n.y., to Sir Walter Hely-Hutchinson. Stanley asks to be excused from an engagement that evening 'as I see no immediate end to my work - unless I put in a few hours extra', and concludes by adding that he hopes to be free from noon the following day. VG Walter Hely-Hutchinson (1849-1913) Anglo-Irish Diplomat and Colonial Administrator who served as Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Natal and Zululand 1893-1901 & as Governor of the Cape Colony, 1901.
HAMEL GUSTAV: (1889-1914) British Pioneer Aviator. Hamel delivered the first official airmail in Great Britain on 9th September 1911. Vintage signed sepia postcard photograph, an historic image depicting Hamel and his aircraft preparing to leave Hendon for Windsor to make the first official airmail flight in Great Britain. Signed in bold, dark fountain pen ink to a light area at the head of the image and dated 1913 in his hand. Together with Marcel Desoutter (1894-1952) English Pioneer Aviator, founder of the Desoutter Aircraft Company. Vintage signed sepia postcard photograph of Desoutter in a head and shoulders pose seated in the cockpit of his aircraft. Signed ('M Desoutter') in dark fountain pen ink to the verso and dated Hendon, 28th August 1912 in his hand. Together with a second vintage signed sepia postcard photograph by Desoutter, the image showing several aircraft and onlookers at the London Aerodrome, Hendon. Signed by the aviator with his name alone in fountain pen ink to the verso. Also including Clement Greswell (1891- ) British Pioneer Aviator, assisted Hamel in the King George V Coronation Aerial Post flights, 1911. Greswell was granted Royal Aero Club aviators certificate number 26 on 15th November 1910. Ink signature ('Clement Greswell') on a printed correspondence card bearing the address of the Lee collectors of Reading. Dated in Greswell's hand London Aerodrome, Hendon, 19th December 1912. Some light discoloration to the edges and corners of Greswell's card, not affecting the signature. G to about VG, 4

Signed ('Schulz') by Schulz in black ink to a clear area of the cover, adding a small original sketch of Woodstock. VG
MASEFIELD JOHN: (1878-1967) English Poet Laureate 1930-67. A good A.L.S., with his initials J. M., one page, 4to, Cushendun, Co. Antrim, Ireland, n.d. (late 1920s?), to Siegfried Sassoon. Masefield announces 'Will you put me down for two guineas?' and adds that he will send a cheque as soon as he returns home, continuing 'I'll square matters somehow with R[obert] B[ridges]. You can bear witness that I did pass on his remarks. A charming thought like yours ought not to be squelched.' The poet further writes 'I don't think you'll get R B to any presentation: he is in a very growly frame of mind. You will probably have to get Sir Hugh Allen, Newbolt, Binyon etc. to accompany you to Chilswell with the clarichord on a cart, & leave it with a delayed fuse to burst upon him. BARRIE J. M.: (1860-1937) Scottish Novelist, created Peter Pan. Black ink signature, ('Yours Sincerely J.M. Barrie'), on a piece clipped from the conclusion of a letter. Double matted in black and white beneath a photograph of Barrie seated in a three-quarter length pose. Framed and glazed in a modern gold coloured frame to an overall size of 10 x 14.5. VG
[GEORGE VI]: (1895-1952) King of the United Kingdom 1936-52. An electroplate silver twin handled trophy, ornately engraved with floral patterns and an inscription 'H. W. S. S. D. M. Tuckfield, presented by Prince Albert', and date 7th June 1919. With spiral handles and tapered circular cup down to a circular base. Some age wear to the rim, otherwise VG. Prince Albert presented the trophy to a successful competitor at the sports meeting of the Hospital Welfare Society for Lewisham, Deptford and Greenwich.

‘Between Wickets’. Ray Robinson. London 1948. d/w/(poor). Signed to front end page ‘Best of Luck, Len Ray Robinson, 1948’. The book has a letter, dated 10th July, with good cricket content, tipped into the front end paper from Robinson to Hutton and referring to Hutton being dropped for the 3rd Test, the first time he had been omitted since he made his debut in 1937. ‘We feel sure we’’ll see you in action again for England at Leeds and The Oval and I`m looking forward to a quiet talk some time. I was with a party of Australian players at golf in Gloucestershire when England’s side for the 3rd Test came through. We were all absolutely staggered. Next day, before a room full of people at lunch at the Bristol Ground, Sid Barnes called across to us ‘They’ve left out the bast bat in England. Best wishes Len, until next meeting’. Some breaking to internal hinges, odd faults otherwise in good condition Hutton was recalled for the 4th and 5th Tests
