A Victorian Electroplate Centrepiece, Elkington & Co, Birmingham, modelled as an oval footed neo-Renaissance stand with grotesque beasts with a cut glass bowl, inscribed ` To Mr & Mrs James C Scott from Mr & Mrs William M Scott in grateful remembrance of their safe deliverance from the shipwrecked Cunard steam ship Malta on the night of the 15th October 1889` Malta SS was en voyage from Liverpool for Genoa and Venice via Falmouth when she sank 15th October 1889, running ashore in dense fog under the cliffs of Kenidjack Castle, half-mile north of Cape Cornwall. All the 40 crew and 21 passengers were safely removed by the Sennen Lifeboat. approx. 29cm high A/F.

Winston Churchill, an unsmoked ‘La Aroma De Cuba, Habana’ cigar, sealed in cellophane and encased in a glass tube with red wax and cork seal, with typed label inside inscribed “Presented to Colonel H. D. M. Crichton-Maitland, O.B.E. by the Prime Minister The Rt. Hon. Sir Winston S. Churchill K.G. on 13th September 1954 after taking details of his requirements for a Land Rover”, now housed in a mahogany box. Sir Winston Churchill was presented with a Land Rover on his eightieth birthday by the Rover Company. The presentation was made at Chartwell by Jeffery Lloyd Dixon (Sales and Service Director) and Colonel Maitland from Caffyns, the local Kent distributors. P.H. PEARSE, signatory of the 1916 Proclamation, and his brother William Pearse An extraordinary series of unpublished letters to the Dublin building firm Humphreys Ltd., concerning his failure to pay for a portable refectory building erected by them at St. Enda's College, and confirming that he consents to its removal by them if the account is not fully paid by a date in September 1913 (later 1914). Pearse founded his Irish-Ireland school at Cullenswood House in Ranelagh in 1908, and moved to larger premises in extensive grounds at The Hermitage in Rathfarnham in 1910. Initially the school was a success, but he never had the financial resources to pay for the building work needed at The Hermitage. By June 1912 he faced a financial crisis. His Board refused to carry the continuing losses, and he was obliged to liquidate the St. Enda's company, buy the property back from the liquidator, and offer his creditors an interim settlement of 2 shillings in the pound (an early instance of financial restructuring). It seems the Humphreys company - which provided a portable iron-frame building for a refectory - was not a party to this settlement. The letters are as follows: - 17 August 1912, on notepaper of Humphreys Ltd., presumably dictated by them, with their receipt stamp and a Revenue stamp, autograph letter signed P.H. Pearse: 'Understanding that under the terms of your contract with me the property in the portable building erected by you at St. Enda's College vests in you until the building is fully paid for, I consent to your removing same after 1st September 1913 in the event of the total amount .. not being paid to you by that date', also signed M. Carroll (presumably for Humphreys). - 2 Sept. 1913, on St. Enda's notepaper, autograph letter signed P.H. Pearse to Humphreys Ltd., scored across presumably by Humphreys, with their receipt stamp, 'In consideration of your agreeing to allow Refectory building to stand here for another twelve months I undertake to pay you £50 on a/c of balance due .. and to clear the balance within a year; and I will allow you to remove the building on 1st Sept. 1914 if the balance be not cleared by that date.' - 3 September 1913, marked 'Copy', typed letter to Pearse presumably from Humphreys, confirming the arrangements in the previous letter. 'We may here say that under no circumstances whatever will the structure be allowed to remain after September 1st 1914 in the event of full amount plus Interest not being paid.' - Feb. 23 1914, on Sgoil Eanna notepaper, autograph letter signed from William Pearse (brother of Patrick, also executed in 1916), to Messrs. Montgomery & Co. (Solrs), re. Humphreys, 'As my brother Mr. P.H. Pearse is from home, I cannot lay my hand on document you refer to. I must therefore ask you to kindly let matters stand over until his return.' [Pearse was on his way to the United States for a lecture tour, which he hoped would relieve some of his financial problems]. - An original St. Enda's pictorial postcard addressed to Messrs. Montgomery & Cheyter, Solrs., postmarked 23 Feb. '14, stained, fold marks, indistinctly signed W. Pearse, 'Shall write to you in a week's time to say when Mr. Pearse returns'. All these letters are entirely unpublished, so far as we can ascertain. None is in O Buachalla's 'Letters'; none is mentioned in Edwards' biography (which refers to 'the few scraps of correspondence from firms which remain'). They do not change the accepted picture of Pearse's financial problems, but they certainly emphasise the difficulties and humiliations to which he was exposed in seeking to maintain his beloved school. It is not known whether the bill was eventually paid, or whether Humphreys took away their building as threatened. After the Rising, the school reopened under Pearse's sister Margaret, and continued until 1935, though it never became financially secure. (5)

Epistola regia ad Saxoniæ duces - [London, 1521]: 4to. Provenance: The Earl of Ilchester / Lord Kenyon copy, fine in early eighteenth century calf. STC 13083. This, the first collection of works by the King, not only includes his book on the Seven Sacraments but also a report on the reception given when a copy was presented to Pope Leo X. His awarding of the title "Fidei Defensor" to Henry is a piece of schoolboy history, almost as well known as the monarch's six wives. However this volume, which, when complete, is rare contained a "timebomb" which future historians from both sides of the religious divide have been reluctant to bring into the public arena. This was the action of the pope in promulgating an indulgence for all those who would read Henry's book and fulfill the normal conditions. Sweeney 2283. Provenance: The estate of Tony Sweeney

1589 ASCHAM, Roger. The Schoolmaster. Or, Playne and perfite way of teaching Children, to understande, write, and speake the Latin toong, but specially purposed for the private bringing up of youth in Gentlemen and Noblemens houses: London: Printed by Abell Jeffers, 1589. 8vo. pp. [viii], 61, 1 (Colophon). Modern antique calf. A very good copy. STC 836. Shortly before his death John Daye who had printed the first four editions yielded his rights to the Stationers Company for the use of the poor January 8 1584 (Arber II.788). The value of the book was emphasized "for all such as have forgot the Latin toong, and would, by themselves, without a schoolemaister, in short time, and with small paines, recover a sufficient habilitie, to understand, write, and speake Latine. This treatise in which Ascham expressed wonderfully advanced ideas on educational matters, especially in relation to corporal punishment which he opposed, was left unfinished. However the preface to the reader contains valuable background information of when and how this topic arose. "When the great plague was at London, the yeare 1563, the Queenes Maiestie Queen Elizabeth, lay at her Castle of Windsore: Where upon, the 10 day of December it fortuned that in Sir William Cicels chamber, her Highnesse principall Secretarie" there dined Sir William and the greater part of the Privy Council. "I was glad than, and do rejoice yet to remember, that my chaunce was so happie, to be there that day, in the company of so many wise and good men together, as hardly then could have bene picked out againe, out of all England beside. Mr Secretarie hath this accustomed maner, though his head be never so full of most weightie affaires of the Realme, yet at dinner time he doth seeme to lay them always aside: and findeth ever fitte occasion to taulke pleasantlie of other matters, but most gladlie of some matter of learning: wherein he will courteously heare the minde of the meanest at his Table. Not long after opur sitting downe, I hav e strange newes brought me sayth M. Secretarie, this morning, that diverse schollers of Eaton, be runne away from the Schoole for feare of beating". Sir William argued against excessive corporal punishment as making pupils forsake their books and this was the majority view of those who spoke up although Sir William Peter "as one somewhat severe of nature, sayde plainely, that the Rodde onely, was the sword, that must keepe the Schoole in obedience, and the Scholler in good order." It was first published by his widow Margaret two years after his death in 1568. She dedicated it to Sir William Cecil, the Queen's principal secretary since "he used in his life to recognize and report your goodnesse toward him, leaving with me then his poore widow and a great sort of orphanes, a good comfort in the hope of your good continuance, which I have truly found to me and mine". Ascham acted as tutor to Princess Elizabeth and Latin Secretary to Elizabeth's half-sister Queen Mary. Provenance: The estate of Tony Sweeney
