MAROLLES (mort vers 1751) Perspective de la place royale de Bordeaux Plume et encre noire sur vélin 38 x 46,5cm Annoté sur le cartouche : "Vue en perspective de la place royale de Bordeaux, dédié à M. Boucher intendant de Guienne par son très humble et très obéissant serviteur A Marolle 1737". Vélin tendu sur les bords, quelques taches, petits accidents. Œuvre en rapport : Vue de la place Royale de Bordeaux vus des hauteurs du Lormont, avec dans le cartouche inférieur la Place Royale de Bordeaux, par Marolle, daté de 1738, et envoyé à Louis XV. (voir J. Sargos, "Bordeaux vu par les peintres", ed. Horizon chimérique, Bordeaux, 2006) La construction de la place Royale à Bordeaux (aujourd’hui place de la Bourse) est décidée par l’intendant de Guyenne, Claude Boucher, afin de désengorger la ville qui grâce au commerce transatlantique avait vu sa population triplée en cent ans. L’architecte du roi, Jacques Gabriel arrive à Bordeaux en 1729 afin d’établir les plans de la nouvelle place. Les travaux débutent en 1731 par la construction des quais, puis en 1735 la construction de l’Hôtel des Fermes. En 1738 la première tranche des travaux est terminée (l’aile gauche de la place). Notre dessin daté de 1737 est dédicacé aux armes de Claude Boucher, et montre la place terminée alors qu’elle est à moitié finie à cette date. Il dut servir à montrer à l’intendant une vue globale du chantier lorsqu’il serait fini. D’ailleurs on peut remarquer que le bâtiment dessiné au centre de la place présente de nombreuses variantes avec le bâtiment finalement édifié.

Robert McCormick (1800-1890) was a Royal Navy surgeon and explorer and took part in three of the nineteenth centuryÕs most memorable expeditions: ParryÕs attempt to reach the North Pole in 1827, RossÕs Antarctic expedition of 1839-43 and as commander of the expedition to search for Franklin in 1852-53, all of which narrated here. He also served on the BeagleÕs second voyage as surgeon in 1832. (2)

Morning) alongside; light vertical filing fold and some minor perimeter faults. Fine and with interesting contents dealing with the improvement of lands and bog drainage to prepare for turf cutting.
