An Arts and Crafts turquoise matrix set 18ct yellow gold ring, engraved to the inside 'Frankie-Edgar, April 1915', weight 7.8gms along with a seed pearl set photo ring, set in yellow metal, unmarked (2) CONDITION REPORT: turquoise ring size - M/N showing signs of wear, marks and engraving clear, two small splits to the settingseed pearl ring size - O/P one pearl missing, hoop probably a replacement, showing sign of quite heavy wear
A Continental silver and enamelled erotic case depicting 'Night' or 'Luna', probably Vienna circa 1930, the case finely enamelled with a scantily clad nude figure holding a crescent moon bow within a twinkling starry sky, indistinctly stamped probably '935' and makers mark 'M P' or 'M F', 8.5cm x 8cm, weight 4.1ozt By repute: Found in the mud on the battlefield at Monte Casino circa 1944. CONDITION REPORT: Some very minor surface scratching and wear, one small dent to the silver by the clasp to the front and back, one knock to the corner, overall condition is good. Interior - one retainer for the elastic on the inside cover has become detached, some tarnishing and would need professional cleaning - see the images attached to this lot for further clarification and an image of the mark. Hinge sound and case closes well.
A large collection of cloth bound Duckworth Press books, to include, ANDREYEFF (L), THE CRUSHED FLOWER AND OTHER STORIES, 1917 (file copy); QUEEN OF ROUMANIA, ILDERIM, 1925, (file copy); KIRBY (E), LITTLE MISS MUFFET, 1918; COLLINS (G), THE VALLEY OF EYES UNSEEN, 1923; COLLINS (G)M FLOWER OF ASIA, 1922; BOOTH (E), THE TREE IN THE GARNDEN; RHOSCOMYL (O), VERONA, and ten with matching gilt red cloths, some have pencil notes on title stating 'file copy', this denotes that they were part of the collection of Alice Thomas Ellis, later Anna Haycraft and ho was Fiction Editor at Duckworth, she died in 2005. A 9 carat gold peridot and seed pearl cluster ring, an oval cut peridot within a border of seed pearls, to forked scroll shoulders, finger size O; an 18 carat gold turquoise and diamond ring, five graduated oval cut turquoise spaced by diamond accents, to a carved setting, finger size M and a 9 carat gold carnelian ring, a kite cut carnelian in a rubbed over setting, finger size N (3)The peridot ring is in good condition. It is hallmarked with sponsor's mark 'CL&S', Edinburgh 1991. The turquoise ring is in good condition. There is discolouration to the turquoise. It is hallmarked with maker's mark 'SB&SLD', Birmingham, 1910. The carnelian ring is in good condition. There is a very small chip to one corner. It is hallmarked with maker's mark 'JR', Chester, 1911. Gross weight 8.6 grams. Condition Report made 28th July 2017.
[Brooke, Rupert Chawnor, 1887-1915]. An Outdoor Breviary, by M. Jourdain, 1st edition, Academy Press, 1909, Rupert Brooke's copy, boldly signed and dated by him in pencil to front free endpaper, 'Rupert Brooke, 1910', indistinct pencil note, possibly in Brooke's hand, to margin of p. 105, '[?]her two (?)', additionally a loose sheet of paper inserted with six words in pencil in the same hand, 'jewels / powder / colour / traherne / aubrey / jefferies', top edge gilt, remainder untrimmed, original blue buckram gilt, rubbed and slightly darkened on spine, 8vo A peculiarly uncommon book, being a collection of prose poems by Margaret Jourdain, who was to become a scholar of English furniture and decorative arts. Rupert Brooke's father, a school master at Rugby School died in 1910 and Brooke was to spend a term there acting as housemaster of School Field, publishing his first volume of poetry the following year. Timlin (William M.). The Ship that Sailed to Mars, A Fantasy, 1st edition, George G. Harrap & Company, [1923], 48 leaves of calligraphic printed text mounted on grey backing leaves, and 48 full-page colour plates mounted on grey backing leaves, some light spotting to title and following 2 leaves of text, some marks to endpapers, and early ownership inscription of Stella M. Dunn, Kimberley to front endpaper, original gilt-decorated vellum-backed boards, a little rubbed and some marks, with light traces of damp, and minor associated damage to head of upper joint, original worn printed dust wrapper, loosely inserted (spine not present), 4to One of 2000 copies printed, the cost of which the author himself contributed £425. In 1928, 1208 copies were remaindered, and many then destroyed during the London Blitz in 1941. (1)
