ABRAHAM BLOEMAERT (Gorcum, Netherlands, 1564- Utrecht, 1651)."Saint Paul", 1631.Oil on canvas.Signed and dated in the upper right corner.Size: 74.5 x 63 cm; 104 x 93 cm (frame). In this painting, masterfully worked with firm and material brushstrokes, Abraham Bloemaert presents us St. Paul in the foreground on a neutral background, with his gaze directed towards the front. He is dressed in a dark red tunic, accompanied by the book that identifies him from the beginning and the sword, the instrument of his martyrdom with which he is later recognised, of which only the hilt is visible. Bloemaert presents the saint with great naturalism. The face is the absolute protagonist of the work, magnificently modelled through a skilful use of light and shade, with appropriate contrasts that enhance the plasticity of the features and define the artist as a faithful follower of Caravaggio's aesthetic postulates. The gaze is the focus of our attention, and it is reflected with a veracity typical of a careful study of life, with great drama and a deep mysticism.A renowned painter and engraver, Bloemaert initially worked in the style of the "Haarlem Mannerists", but in the 16th century he modified his style in accordance with the new Baroque of Caravaggio, becoming an important master of the Utrecht Caravaggists. He was a pupil of Gerrit Splinter, himself a pupil of Frans Floris, and of Joos de Beer. In 1581 he spent three years in Paris, furthering his studies with Jean Cousin the Younger and the Master of Herry. He completed his training at the Ecole de Fontainebleau in an environment dominated by the elegant and sensual models of the French court. On his return to Utrecht in 1611, together with the two other leading painters (Joachim Wtewael and Paulus Moreelse), he was one of the founders of the Guild of Saint Luke in Utrecht, a new painters' guild of which he became dean in 1618. An eclectic and versatile painter, he cultivated all genres of painting, from historical and allegorical subjects to still lifes, portraits and animal paintings. Bloemaert is represented at the Detroit Institute of Arts in Michigan, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Louvre Museum in Paris, the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts in San Francisco, the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, the J. The owner of the work has the museum's letter of request, sent in 1996 and signed by the curator of painting at the time, Liesbeth M. Helmus.

Lot 1035

HITLER ADOLF: (1889-1945) Fuhrer of the Third Reich 1933-45. An historically important Autograph Manuscript, unsigned, two pages, 4to, n.p. (Munich?) n.d. (February 1925), in German. The holograph notes were prepared by Hitler in advance of a speech (the first following his release from prison) he delivered in Munich's Burgerbraukeller on 27th February 1925. In the upper left corner Hitler has penned the year 1918 followed by the questions 'What had happened?' and 'Just what went wrong', continuing with a diagram separating the political parties 'on the Left "Proletariat"….Marxism….finished for good due to criminality' and 'on the Right "Bourgeoisie"……bourgeois parties….broke down due to cowardice' and also including the 'Volunteer Corps - Nationalist Organisations, Citizens Defending Themselves', the manuscript continuing with other relevant points he intended to deliver within the speech, 'Stick to the facts. Parties reject violence (cowardly). Associations are non-political (stupid. They keep pulling their chestnuts out of the fire). During all this the nation is destroyed, plundered domestically and internationally. Could anything still help? Founding of the NSDAP [National Socialist German Workers' Party, more commonly known as the Nazi Party] Goal. Programme', and to the second page Hitler writes further notes, 'Development. 1919-20-21-22-23. 8th November Result: Inflation. 1924 Parliament. Struggle within the movement. Did anyone care about us? No. My release. December 1924, February 27th 1925. Buttmann. The division is impending. I and Held. I and Rohm. I and Ludendorff. Lies. The old movement……The movement? In a different Germany. Here.' Autograph material of Adolf Hitler is extremely rare in any form, and the present notes are of particular significance in Hitler's rise to power, this particular speech representing a landmark moment in the re-establishing of the Nazi Party and Hitler cementing his position as 'der Fuhrer'. A couple of extremely minor, very small holes at the intersection of a couple of folds, VG'If anyone comes and tries to make conditions to me then I say to him: friend, wait and see what conditions I have to make to you. I am not wooing the masses. After a year you shall judge, my party comrades; if I have not acted correctly, then I shall place my office in your hands again. But until that moment this is the rule: I lead the movement alone, and no one shall set me conditions so long as I personally bear the responsibility. And I once more bear entire responsibility for everything that happens in the movement' (extract from Adolf Hitler's two-hour speech delivered at the Burgerbraukeller, Munich, 27th February 1925)Hitler joined the tiny German workers party in 1919, He quickly became its leader. On 9 November 1923, at the height of the great German inflation (on 20 November, one U.S. dollar was equal to four trillion German marks), Hitler risked a coup. He led his followers through the streets of Munich to the Feldherrnhalle, a war memorial, where waiting police opened fire. Sixteen of Hitler's followers were killed; Hitler himself was arrested, and after a trial that he turned into a political platform, he was sentenced to four years in prison. The party was banned, and its remnants degenerated into squabbling factions. Hitler stood outside the fray, using his time in prison to write Mein Kampf. He was released in December 1924 after serving only nine months of his term, and set about rebuilding the party. The authorities lifted the ban on the Nazi Party on 16 February 1925. Hitler now arranged one of his rhetorical masterpieces: a mass meeting on 27 February to re-establish the party. He chose the same beer hall from which he had launched his abortive revolution fifteen months earlier. Three thousand people packed the hall, and several thousand more were turned away. He entered to the passionate applause of the audience, and gave [a] two hour speech….Its first three-quarters offered nothing that most in the audience had not already heard, and would hear again in Hitler's future speeches. He reviewed Germany's history, claiming that past conservative parties had no contact with the masses, and that leftist parties pretended to address the problems faced by ordinary Germans, but actually served the interests of the Jews who controlled them. He also outlined his views on propaganda. In the last quarter of the speech, he moved to re-establish his control of the party. He claimed absolute authority. Anyone unwilling to obey could go his own way. Hitler 'forgave' those who had made mistakes in his absence, and demanded that there be no criticism of him or the party for a year. The audience responded with enthusiasm. After the speech, Hitler had arranged…..'a piece of pure theatre'. The Nazi leaders who had fought for supremacy while Hitler was in prison all 'mounted the platform and, among emotional scenes, with many standing on chairs and tables and the crowd pressing forward from the back of the hall, shook hands, forgave each other, and swore undying loyalty to the leader'……The speech succeeded. Hitler once again was absolute leader of the party' (from Landmark Speeches of National Socialism, edited by Randall L. Bytwerk, Texas A&M University Press, 2008)

[HITLER ADOLF]: (1889-1945) Fuhrer of the Third Reich 1933-45. An interesting, small group of T.Ls.S. and documents issued by various members of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Berlin and presented to Otto Meissner, all relating to requests made by various British subjects to have meetings with Adolf Hitler during 1937-38, including a T.L.S. by Boltze, an employee at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, two pages, 4to, Berlin, 7th August 1937, to Otto Meissner, in German. Boltze states that John Groth, the honorary German vice-consul in Bradford, has asked to be received by the Fuhrer and Reich Chancellor and continues to comment 'Groth, the British national who has carried out the functions of honorary German vice-consul since 1926, has always represented German interests very ably, and has devoted himself completely and wholeheartedly to the strengthening of friendly relations between England and Germany. As a great admirer of the Fuhrer and Reich Chancellor, Growth has expressed his long-cherished wish for arrangements to be made for him…..to be received by the Fuhrer and Reich Chancellor at Berchtesgaden…..In view of Mr. Groth's services…..the request is supported by the head of the 'Germans Abroad' organisation in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in spite of the basic attitude stated in your letter of 21st October 1935', an extract from the said letter appears as a postscript and states 'Except in cases where there are very special reasons, it is not the Fuhrer and Reich Chancellor's practice personally to receive our honorary consuls from abroad during their visits to Germany. Deviation from this rule would lead to criticisms or to burdening the Fuhrer with such a number of audiences as to be insupportable', with a brief A.N.S. by Otto Meissner (1880-1953, German civil servant, Chief of the Presidential Chancellery 1920-45) at the head, signed with his initial ('M'), stating that the request is not feasible, accompanied by a typed document containing various biographical details of Growth including his date of birth, religion, education, spoken languages, family etc.; a T.L.S., von Bulow-Schwante, by Vicco von Bulow-Schwante (1891-1970; German Diplomat who served as Chief of the Protocol Department of the Foreign Office), two pages, 4to, Berlin, 17th April 1937, to Otto Meissner, on the printed stationery of the protocol department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in German. Bulow-Schwante announces that on 29th & 30th April a second meeting of the joint committee established by the German-French-British agreement of 1935 on the tending of German war graves on British and French territory, as well as of British war graves on German territory, will take place in Berlin and continues to list the British, French and German delegates to be involved, including Sir Fabian Ware, General Sir George MacDonogh, the French ambassador in Berlin, Joachim von Ribbentrop, Vice-Admiral von Trotha etc. Bulow-Schwante further states that the previous meeting took place in London in 1936 and that the 'German members, together with the French, were on that occasion received by the British King and by the Duke of York' adding 'The British members who will be at the meeting have made known their wish to be received by the Fuhrer and Reich Chancellor' and remarking 'The Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly supports the reception they have requested, in which the participation of other members of the Committee, particularly the French, would no doubt also be considered', together with a typed carbon copy, unsigned, of Meissner's reply, one page, 4to, Berlin, 19th April 1937, in German; and several other letters relating to proposed meetings with Joseph Lyons Broderick of Balliol College, Oxford, Margaret Langford of Cheshire, Howard Hawkins of London etc. All with two file holes to the left edges, a few neatly clipped corners, and various official pencil annotations etc. Generally VG, 8

An interesting series of T.Ls.S. and documents relating to a visit by Menzies to Germany in July 1938 with the hope of meeting Adolf Hitler and other high-ranking Nazi leaders, comprising a typed letter, unsigned, by von Scmieden of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, two pages, 4to, Berlin, 16th July 1938, to the Presidential Chancellery of the Fuhrer, in German, announcing that a telegram has been received from the German Embassy in London informing them that 'Menzies, the Australian Attorney General, who will possibly be the next Australian Prime Minister, intends to travel soon to Berlin….with the aim of exchanging views with influential German personalities' and further stating 'He would be grateful if it could be made possible for him to have a talk with General Field Marshal Goring, Reich Minister Goebbels and Herr Schacht, the president of the Reich Bank', although also remarking 'In reply to his request for an audience with the Fuhrer, he was informed that this would hardly be possible in view of the short notice'.
