* Lane (Richard James). His Highness The Maharajah Duleep Singh, from a Painting by Winterhalter in the possession of Her Majesty..., published by John Mitchell, Royal Library, printed by M & N Hanhart, 1854, chromolithograph finished by hand, trimmed to image and tipped onto a gilt titled backboard (as published), image size 535 x 295 mm, mounted, framed and glazedQTY: (1)NOTE:A fine full-length portrait of Victor Albert Jay Duleep Singh. Duleep Singh is remembered for surrendering the Koh-i Noor diamond to Queen Victoria as part of the treaty and settlement following the end of the Second Anglo-Sikh War. He was forced to abdicate his sovereignty as Maharaja of Lahore and he came to England in 1854. He became a close friend of the royal family, visiting Queen Victoria at Osborne House and inviting the Prince of Wales to shoot at his estate at Elveden Hall in Suffolk. This close relationship with the Queen is reinforced in the lithograph by the presence of her miniature, which is worn by the Maharaja on a string of pearls around his neck.

FRENCH 1ST EMPIRE, 37TH REGIMENT OF LINE, AN HISTORIC SHAKO. A most rare and important original example, worn by 'M. Berthon', who, according to a period label, saw service in 'Allemagne 1809, Hollande 1810, Espagne 1811, 1812, 1813, Waterloo 1815'. Further labels show that the shako was in the Jeanne Sully Collection, Fontainebleau. It was Catalogue number 780 at a famous Exhibition held in Paris? in 1900. Further details contained in this label show that Berthon was a Conscript in the class of 1808. The shako of stiffened black felt is 7.5 inches in height, 9.25 inches across the crown, this is of leather with a slightly sunken top, a near 1 inch turn-over and a half inch bottom bracing band. The front peak in unstiffened leather is unbound and 2 inches maximum in width. The shako plate in thin gauge die-stamped brass features the imperial Eagle and pierced '37'. A tooled leather circular tri-colour above with small plain button. The graded brass chin scales of scallop format are tied up behind the cockade (fastener lacking); the side ornaments in brass are circular with a five-point central star, two supports for the cord festoons are located on the crown turn-down, and feature hooked five pointed stars. Lining has emphasised the texture of the canvas weave in the paint layers. Overall the canvas tension is good and the pictures are in plane.calm waters – the painting has several small tears repaired to the right side of the sky. The surface texture and overpaint in these areas is poor, partly due to discolouration of the overpaint and they are visible to the eye. In the right hand quadrant is an area of paint with uneven surface texture, possibly caused by heat, this area has also been poorly retouched.Choppy waters - there is evidence of retouching under UV light - mainly infilling to the craquelure in places. This is not extensive however, and beyond a small patch to the right of the sky where there is somce discolouration, see photo, the painting is well presented and ready to hang. Both paintings have clear, even varnish with fly spots and surface dirt.Overall size 55 x 70.5cm
